I am a clorox nut. I use it to sanitize everything.

I want to thoroughly clean he head on this boat I just bought. Are there any beneficial bacteria in the system that would be killed/harmed by the use of clorox?

Not sure about the bacteria but enough of it will damage the rubber parts in the head.

if you use Clorox is the head...plan on replacing all rubber parts before you launch in spring

Peggy is cringing right about now.... Don't put bleach in the head or holding tank system.

Yes, the steady use of bleach will damage rubber seals, but I find it hard to imagine how a 1 time cleaning using a 10% solution should cause any damage. Be certain the holding tank is also well diluted, then pump out.

I am not concerned about rubber parts because I will not be using high concentrations nor will the clorox be left to stand for any period of time. My main concers was about killing beneficial bacteria.

Yes, you will kill the beneficial bacteria.

Of course.....you could bleach it to make you happy. Pump out the holding tank. Rinse a little water, then pump again. THEN......sit down and take a nice CLEAN dump to recharge the system.

I don't know why I had to suggest that....., but technically, its correct. Everything you need to re-charge your holding tank system is already "on board".

As has been noted, Chlorox will dry out any rubber seals or gaskets to which it is exposed, causing them to become brittle and shortening their useful life, in addition to killing any "good bacteria" in your holding tank. It kills all the bacteria, doesn't know the difference between the good and the bad. BTW, Chlorox is already diluted with water, to where it's only about a 5% solution to begin with. If you dilute it even farther with water, particularly a 10% solution (if I understood you correctly - 9 parts water to one part Chlorox), you've diluted it to where it really isn't doing much of anything any longer, good or bad.

I use any detergent or even simple green in a partially full tank then slosh around by hitting some waves to loosen any stuff on the bottom from sitting too long. then several fill empty rinse cycles then add some KO. It probably doesent loosen everything but it does make me feel better. I see no harm in washing the seat and bowl at the same time with a little bleach so that you can feel better about the condition of the toilet. Remember that vacuflush and other have rubber seals in the head itself so no long term bleach contact.
