I have a 1998 Carver Mariner 350 with 454 EFI's and Walter V-Drive transmissions.I am hearing a clunking noise when I put the port engine in or out of gear. Has anyone else had this problem? Or what could be causing it?
My old boat with v-drives always sounded like marbles rolling around in low idle.
When I sped up it went away.
I was always told it was the linkage rattling and was normal at low speeds.
Is that what you hear?
Last weekend as we backed into our slip, the boater behind us said he heard the clunking sound. I did not because music was on . I turned off the music and shifted the trans in and out of gear several times with NO noise being heard. Then when we went to take it out this weekend the clunking sound started again. Does it every time now when put into gear.
Does it go away when you go above idle speed?
If so, could be that it's not fully engaged in gear perfectly.
I was on someone's boat earlier this summer with the same thing. It turned out to be just a linkage that needed adjustment.
