Does anyone have or know of a cockpit awning available for the Mariner? Where we are in our slip, we get the morning sun in our cockpit and would like to put something up that was either portable or could be rolled up when not needed. Before starting the project from scratch, was hoping there was something on the market that would work or could be altered or at least someone out there who has done it before to give some ideas.

Appreciate any input.

I've seen those large sun umbrellas, or you could have a camper style top made, although I don't think that would look very nice. Are you trying to keep the sun out of the door, or the entire cockpit?

Stu,
Would a Bimini type top block the sun or do you need something angled down? I'm thinking something made with that Phifertex mesh sun screen product. One buys it like any other fabric and it is an attractive mesh that can be color coordinated with your canvas. Border it with sunbrella, add snaps to attach it above cabin entrance then figure out what type of angle you want to the transom. Do some measuring then go to Sailrite or canvasdealer.com to see the product.

all kidding aside. I had the marina move me to slip that had a nice tree behind it. Works well for shade when friends and family pop by too. Not sure if that option is possible for you. Down side - you certainly can't take it with you when overnighting elsewhere.

Good suggestion to move, but there are no open slips, in fact have a waiting list even for the temp slips. Plus our location is great when sitting on the bridge, have a nice view of Middle River and to starboard of the Chesapeake Bay. I saw a couple of photos on Yacht World of Mariners with a cover over the cockpit, they look like a bimini. I am going to see if any of the standard biminis are wide enough (have 12' 4" beam) or what would be involved in trying to make one. One that I saw and liked had the aft poles like a standard bimini, but forward only had straps that attached to the rail of the ladders, no poles. We don't need it heavy duty like on the bridge since it won't be open while running, only when in port. Any ideas are appreciated.

Stu,

Taylor Made has a product called the "AnchorShade" which may work...I saw it flipping through the 2008 annual catalogue for a large national chain. Not sure if Les carries it OR if it would be too small for your beam. Taylor also makes something called the "Pontoon Gazebo"
