My 20 yr old reverse cycle AC / heat unit from Yacht Air is not cooling as much as it used to. Last year I acid cleaned the heat exchanger tubes and saw a small increase in cooling ability. Can these units be re-charged with a "Freon" type refrigerant ?

I would rather not replace them but I think it may be time. We don't use the AC much at all, but at times.....

Any Ac system can be recharged and brought to the proper pressure.get a recommendation for a local marine AC guy and have him check the pressures

Did you acid clean the hoses in and out of the ac units?

They could be clogged up with growth reducing performance.

Yeah first thing is to check for flow at th overboard discharge... Acid cleaning the coils helps thermal exchange but if the hoses are filled with shells, flow will be greatly reduced. Especially the hose between the thru hull and th pump. I usually get more shells growing in there

TJM,

20 years old, not sure if that Freon is even still available. Second, if you were low on freon, the unit would freeze up. So I don't think Freon is the problem.

You can also clean the fins on the unit inside the boat as well.

They build up with a coating of dust and fuzz 'insulating' the metal from the air that passes thru them.

This too can reduce performance.

The various forms of "freon" - R12, R13, R22, ... - are all still available. They just get pricier the longer they have been out of production. A unit slightly low on coolant can perform poorly and not freeze up.

The water flow is good. I got the advise from here a few years ago to "acid" clean with B_Buster and saw a huge improvement in flow but the output air is still not cool.
I will look into the Freon.
