Okay, so I just finished installing a SIMRAD AP14 auto pilot which has its own compass and provides a heading display. This will make a total of 3 compass displays at the helm plus 2 COG displays from the chartplotter and GPS heads.
The compass display
1. Magnetic Ritice(sp?)helmsman - Globe/reference marks
2. KVH Azimuth digital fluxgate w/display and NMEA interface with chartploter - Electronic
3. Simrad auotpilot compass - Electronic
The magnetic globe would need to be calibrated by a professional which I understand is very costly and no one locally qualified.
The electronic one can be set programmed with an offset to display correctly. However to do so I need a good or known bearing to base it off - which I don't
I am thinking to use a hand bearing compass set on center line which I would string from bow tip to stern center and use that. But any good hand compass is very expensive and not worth the purchase for one time use.
Any suggestions?
BTW I am in Oceanside, NY in case there is someone with local knowledge.
