Hi guys, I'm looking to see if anybody has and info for me regarding a trip I may be taking. I'm looking at a boat at a marina on the Connecticut River and was thinking about driving it back to my homeport on the Delaware River. Has anyone done this trip before or have any other info that may be helpful? Thanks, Joe.

You may want to post a little more information about your new boat, your current experience and your entry point heading into inland waters on the Delaware. Most of us can help you with information leaving the GSB and out the various inlets. In some cases, it may be worth just hiring a transporter. But that would not be as fun !!!

Brad - I'm looking at a 2004 27' Maxum with a single 6.2 engine. My experience has been limited to the Delaware River. I would enter the Delaware River at the Delaware Bay. I was leaning towards hiring a qualified person to make the trip with me for added safety. Also, I could always try to find a trailer for the boat and tow it home, but what would the fun in that be?
Joe, I bought my boat from a marina on the CT River also. How far up the river is the boat you are looking at? Mine was up in Portland and the ride down to the LI Sound was about 4 hours with all the no wake zones, plus since I was unfamiliar with the river and the boat I wanted to take my time. Something to keep in mind when planning if it's far up the river. I'm on the south shore of Long Island, so spent a night in Montauk on the way home and then headed around Montauk Point and along the south shore the second day. For going south to Delaware it would probably make more sense to head west on the LI sound and then go through the east river past Manhattan and then south. That would keep you in more protected waters longer with numerous harbors along the Connecticut or LI North Shore coasts to pull into if any problems. Inlets on the south shore are few and can be tricky depending on conditions.
John, I believe it is called Seaboard Marina, which is above Chester if I'm not mistaken. Yes I was looking on a map and it looks like going west across the Sound and to the East River is shortest route. Good info on the no wake zones.

Joe, consider my boat if looking in the 26-27 foot range. It's a 2002 Four Winns 268 Vista Cruiser. 28'2" LOA, 8'6" beam. 160 hours in absolute mint condition. It has a Volvo Penta 8.1 Gi, with their DuoProp drive, 375 horses. IMO- the Maxum you're looking at with a small block is underpowered. I am the original owner and have spared no time or expense in maintaining this boat. Also have the 2 plus 4 warranty, good til 5/31/08. Just a thought.
Joe, just looked at a map, doesn't look like Chester is too far up. Mine was all the way up in Portland. But still expect to spend much of your time in no wake zones while heading south. I think somewhere online there is a chart of the CT River with the regulations.
Going through the East River and NY harbor you'll want to keep a close watch for debris in the water. It can also get a little rough from commercial traffic and ferries. But I think it's a better option for you then going around Montauk and running the beach the whole way back.

Joe, sorry, when I read your post, I thought I was reading the Connetquot River, “da” which is on the Great South Bay, by Oakdale. John’s information will be helpful. Good Luck.

I made the trip from LI to the Chesapeake Bay a couple of years back. Its an easy trip if the weather cooperates. Plan on watching for a weather window and running down the outside on the Jersey leg. Plan your fuel stops and a place to RON and it should be a nice trip. It took us about 16 hours running time at an average 18 knots (Silverton 351)to get from Babylon, NY to the head of the Delaware Bay. I would suggest that you plan an overnight stop in Cape May so you can get in and out of the Delaware Bay before the afternoon chop starts.

Speeds on the river are 30 mph I believe and are enforced. I assume if you buy you will not take delivery until spring. buy then the bouys will be back in and so will the water cops. If you make the trip it will take you about 4.5 hours to get ta Saybrook Point from Glastonbury. I live just south of there in Portland. If you so go ahead the areas to watch for police are the huge no wake in Middletown. They do not mind at all issuing tickets there and also in Haddam. There are usually two on jet skies. Try to make your trip during the week as the river is quite conjested. Not sure on the overall length or beam on the Maxum, but the sound can get rough for not being an ocean.
