Looking to have new GPS/sonar installed on a 1990 Montego 2757. My mechanic says he can do a flush mount of the transducer in the engine room, but only if the hull isn't cored.

I understand the newer Carvers are built that way. My question is, are the older and smaller models the same?

Thanks for any info!

Bill

All carver built after 1982 or so have solid fiberglass bottoms...no coring except above the waterline in the hullsides and only then on boats 32 feet and larger. My 1988 27 Montego's hull is approximately and inch thick of solid glass where I installed my thru-hull for the AC a few years back.

Our 1988 3257 was solid glass and solid as a rock!

Is the transducer thru-hull or in-hull (shoot thru) type? Shouldn't have to drill into the hull for an in-hull type. Just rough up the surface with sandpaper and silicone the tranducer housing into place. Even if its a cored hull, a larger diameter hole filled with epoxy then tapped for the screws/bolts would maintain the integrity of the core material. Gotta be done right though.

rapscallion, "in-hull (shoot thru)" install is not recommended for a cored hull.

Will it work? Maybe, but it is definitely not designed to work on a cored hull. If it does work, do not be surprised if you get poor performance. Solid "glass" is just fine, however.
