I think you're better off going up to Great Egg inlet. Lots of shallow water and shoaling around either Corsons or Townsends. Even at Great Egg, there has always been a shoal around the north end of OC. You'll see the white water as you come in. Stick to the Ships Channel (Black and White buoys marking center of channel), which favors the Longport side as you come in. Grew up on a 22 AquaSport in OC. Great boating, but again, lots of shallow water. In Great Egg bay, it's hard sand bottom. Through the ICW mostly muck bottom. Stick to the channel markers. They're right on the edges. Just outside of them and you're going to ground. There are lots of shortcuts and unmaked channels, but you need to know where they are and most can only be taken at high tide. If you're going skiing or other tow sports, head up the Tuckahoe or Great Egg rivers. Great Egg will lead you right to the home of Boatfix! (Mays Landing). Our favorite was Patcong Creek, but the mouth of the creek is VERY shallow and should only be attempted at high tide. Once past the Mays Landing Road bridge, it deepens up and is great for tow sports. There are a couple of deep water coves up there (Little Cove 39-19-52 74-36-42 and Big Cove 39-20-16 74-36-10) where you can beach the boat and party on the beach. Just beware the Green-Heads! From Great Egg Bay, you can also go north up the ICW into AC. Several of the casinos are on the back bay and have dock facilities. Good luck and have fun!
