Cost to repalce Risers and Manifolds?

I just paid $2750 total parts and labor for Mercruiser risers, elbows and manifolds on my MPI 5.7 2004 Mercuiser with a bravo 3.

I am in process of replacing the 4" risers/6" spacers/manifolds on my 2002 5.7 magnum. The yard quote for e-coated mercrusier parts was $1945, with only 2 hours alloted for labor. I said it seemed way too high, and that maybe i would get the parts on my own and discuss labor with them. After some careful ebay shopping, I got all parts for $748 delivered. Mercrusier e-coated manifolds with quicksilver gaskets, Barr 6" spacers, and Sierra e-coated 4" risers with the better quality gaskets. Ironically, now the marina is asking for 4 hours of labor or $440. The engine is wide open, I plan on doing it myself.

One note, they quoted me $415 for the spacer kit, that was where the major discrepancy came from. I bought the basic spacers for $165 as I do not need this kit. Double check if your marina is doing the same.

I spent ALOT because I tried to stretch Manifolds & Risers an extra season. afer the motor was out of the boat, and the heads were back from the machine shop, and all new rings & bearings were installed. my Mechanic charged very little to install the new Manifolds / Risers since it was done while on an engine stand in his shop.. turned out to be the easiest manifold job he had all year. (only because the motor was out of the boat, and the machine shop removed the broken manifold bolts) I went with aftermarket Manifolds / risers on his recomendation, I think they were around $800 for the setup (454 EFI Merc.) good luck, and next time plan this kind of work over the winter.. most mechanics will thank you and cut a much better deal in October then June..

As far as when to replace, or at least check, after 5 1/2 seasons in salt water (6 month season, on a mooring, not flushed till the end of season, filled with antifreeze over the winter) I found that one manifold (these are the one piece units, no separate riser) was clear in the 4 water outlets, the other had clogged on one outlet. I was able to clean out the old ones, but still installed the new set to be on the safe side. I think that 5 years, you should at least pull off the risers to check. I saw no sign of cooling water leaking into the exhaust gas areas. The exhaust ports on the engine had no rust on them at all, no rust on the exhaust valve stems, which is what you want to see....
