Okay I bought a 1987 Four Winns Sundowner with a 4.3L mercruiser I/O. The tach did not work when I bought the boat and it is made by Medallion. I contacted them and they were able to repair it and send it back. I installed and initially it worked and then all of a sudden the needle disappeared under the plexiglass. I removed the front plexiglass face and saw that the needle moved 180 deg opposite to the position it is suppose to be and it is acting like it is running in reverse. Is there any wiring issue on the boat that would cause the tach to behave this way. I know I wired it up properly and verified that it was set for 6 cyl.

Since it worked when you reinstalled it after repair, there isn't a wiring issue. Tachs are pretty simple; they measure the current between the +ignition voltage and ground through the negative side of the coil.
Most marine instruments have a small mechanical stop or tab that limits the meter movement in either direction. If especially the lower stop has fallen off, the meter will behave exactly as you have described. I'm afraid it's time to send it back for repair.
Most recreational marine gauges aren't really precision instruments and they are assembled with price rather than longevity in mind.
