Crews continue search after two pulled from Lk MI

This was about 40 miles from where we were fishing this morning. Heard part of the search on the Ch. 16.

Turns out the Captain who pulled the one survivor out this morning is a friend. Great job Capt. Joel.

Prayers for those that didn't make it and the rest of the missing.

Handheld VHF, Epirp, life raft - any of those could have saved more of these people. They had time to put on lifejackets on everyone so if they had a backup anything they could have put out a call for help.

The stories I've read are early and a little conflicting. Several reports suggest this was a charter while others report a group of friends. The boat is apparently based out of the same harbor I'm in in Chicago. I also have a slip in New Buffalo and regularly make the trip back and forth. Conditions this weekend were very good with minimal waves and good winds. The water is still very cold, mid 60s near shore and upper 50s off shore.

Sadly one of the two people rescued died.

At this point if the timeline is at all accurate they have been in the water for somewhere around 24 hours. This is likely to be a recovery effort at this point. We were out all day and saw the CFD helicopter, Coast Guard MH-65 and C-130 as well as multiple 25' defenders, the Chicago Police Department had 5 surface assets and the fire department had their small fast response boat and their new larger boat.

We were out of Waukegan all day and didn't see any of the search or even hear much on the radio. Friends with Capt Joel on Facebook and he posted about it right after he got the guy back to shore. Details are definitely sketchy but what do you expect from a guy who spent 12 hours in 50/60 degree water?

He is very lucky this was on the south end of the Lake where the water has warmed some. 6 miles off Waukegan there are still surface temps in the 40's. He wouldn't have made it 12 hours.
