"CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. -- A crop-dusting plane crashed on Webb Tract Island in Contra Costa County on Monday morning, killing the pilot, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The pilot was the only person aboard the S-2R Thrush Commander crop duster when it went down at about 11 a.m., FAA Western-Pacific Region spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Contra Costa County's Sheriff's Office received reports that a crop duster plane had hit a pole or tower on the remote island, which is just north of Bethel Island, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, Gregor said.

The pilot's name was not immediately released. The plane was registered in Walnut Grove. "

That's very sad. I hate to hear stories like this one. Those guys work under extreme conditions.

Yes they do! I know a guy who crashed his crop duster and broke his neck and his back in two places. Fortunately, he did not sever his spinal cord. After months in a "halo" contraption and physical therapy, he was able to return to flying. He moved to Florida and became a commercial pilot fore one of the regional carriers. He was SO LUCKY!
