I am a double looper, looking to change next year by going from Albany to Sorel. My charts show several bridges at 15 feet. Does anyone have actual experience on this leg. Hope to do it but if 15 feet is actual it will be a killer.

thanks for any feedback

The 17 ft Ken refers to seems to meet my recollection as well. My understanding is that it's possible for the lock operator to lower pool levels on request, thus increasing vert. clearance. Never tried it, don't know anyone who has. You may wish to contact the NYS Canal System to discuss.

Good luck - I'm jealous of your pending trip!!

There is literally miles between some of the locks. Are you suggesting a state worker would release enough water to accommodate a lowly tax payer? I'd be shocked if they would do that.

We attended the NYC boat show at Javit's and the NYS Canal system had a booth. They were assertive about getting the pool lowered for our boat but we never took it up through the Champlain. Call to confirm and be very accurate about your vertical clearance.

They can manipulate the water levels in the canal and do it all the time. They had to twice for us when we came up through. The second time was unexpected to get under the bridge near Whitehall due to heavy rains the night before. We had to wait an hour or so for the level to go down before heading out for the last lock at Whitehall.

Thanks for the input from everyone, my chart notes several bridges at 15 feet, thanks again for the first hand knowledge.. Will post again before I start...
