My Chrysler 318 engined need to have the exhaust manifold, risers etc changed every 4 or 5 years. Is this true for the 454's.

A mechanic told me they last for 20 years(?)

fresh or raw water cooled? Fresh or salt water?

With any full fresh water cooled engine, the manifolds should last about as long as the engine. Risers, however, will not since they have raw water running thru them.

I have '93, full FWC Crusader 454XLs. I run in salt water & have changed exhaust elbows once since new.

Chryslers, Mercs, Crusaders, 318's, 454's. It really doesn't matter. Whatever the engine is, if it is freshwater cooled, the manifolds should last as long as the engine.
If it's raw water cooled, manifolds could go in 3 years or maybe as long as 10 years depending on where the boat is used - fresh or salt water.

The 454's that I am referring to are in salt water and are fresh water cooled.

My 318 (same - fwc and in salt water) just about die after 4 years with corrosion.

Your 318's, are they a full FWC system or 1/2 system? Meaning, does the closed cooling system include the manifolds? If you have anti-freeze running thru the manifolds, there is no reason they should be rusting out in 4 years.
