I plan to buy a new to me boat this spring and one boat that has caught my eye has a recently installed Crusader 8.1, Jasper reman.

I've read some pretty negative reviews on Jasper.
So what does the Boatered brain trust have to say about Jasper?

I have no experience with Jasper remans or the 8.1's, but thought Jaspers enjoyed a relatively high regard if you are hoping to trust a reman.

I would be more concerned about the 8.1 L. engine part, since sooo many had to be replaced repeatedly under warranty and after, due to water ingestion. They haven't been made in years.

I replaced a 350 Merc with a jasper reman in the late 90s. I kept the boat a few years and put about 150 hrs with no problems. The reviews were good then, heard some negatives recently. They had a good warranty if I remember correctly. The marine shop that replaced that engine would only use Jaspers.

Yes, they haven't been made in years, but correct me if I'm wrong but no one makes a big block gas engine anymore. I believe the biggest new gas you can get is a 6.2.
7.4's for many years, then they came out with 8.1 for a few years, then the 8.2 for a few years, now no one makes a big block.

I bought a 1995 Sea Ray 330 in early 2000 that had twin Jasper 7.4 remans with 1 hour each on them. I was impressed, they performed well and I never had an issue with the blocks or heads. Now, all of the parts that were taken off the old, and reattached to the remans, that's another story :-).

Apparently Crusader no longer offers anything larger than a 6.0L, but Mercruiser lists 2 8.2 L "DTS ECT" I/B engines , at 375 (42-4600 RPM) and 425 HP (HO: 44-4800 RPM).

https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us...terndrive/mercruiser/inboards/#specifications

Both run on 87 octane, and are distributorless.

GVP quit offering ALL Reman engines because of lack of honoring their warranties. He would only offer factory remans who stood behind their products.
