Summer trip:

Eastern Long Island and Newport

OR

Chesapeake Bay????
 
We're thinking about the Chespeake this year Mike. Been talking about it the last two years so it looks like it's time.
 
Unless you are tiered of the sound I vote Newport. Chesapeake is very nice but assuming you would run outside you stand a greater chance of bad weather ruining your plans. Your boat can handle most anything the sound can dish out. It may not by fun but you would feel safe and the plans go on. I came home from Block last year in 5-6' seas and I plowed right through it while my wife was sleeping. The ocean scares me a little and I would never have even considered leaving port in those conditions. Yes I know it was the ocean but I knew I had 19 mile until I hit the sound and the sea would die down.
 
The main drawback to the Chesapeake is the 10 - 15 hours to get there!
 
What is the attraction to the Cheasapeake? There are certainly some great anchorages but are you going all the way to Anapolis? Are you going to risk a weather window and run outside so you can come in down South?
I dunno Mike, three weeks I think I'd rather pull in the goal and run with a known stop closer in that weather is less likely to impact. What about a loop from jersey to the south shore of LI and then into LI sound?
 
If you have 17 days I would consider. I made the trip twice. Oddly both times were one way, Many years ago my parents bought a boat down there and I went with them to bring it back. That time I jumped ship in AC and met my wife for a few days fun trip. Last year I helped Victoria Secret bring his new boat home from NC and we passed through on the way up great trip I think 15 hours sounds a little high I think it would be closer to ten weather permitting. We came through some pretty rough water I don't have a log but I think it was 6 hours to cape may. but I could be wrong Bill may have notes I'm sure he could tell you how much fuel we burned (a lot) but it sure was fun.

How about Ocean City, MD.

I can make that in under 7 hours from my dock.
 
I would go south. You have seen the sound many times - right?

Maybe go up to the inner harbor I heard that is very nice?
 
We just can't get that much time off from work, we are lucky to get 4th of July week off because the wife has block out months for her job. Would love to go away with my dock mates but I guess work comes first. Looking to do something south Jersey this year not sure where yet.
 
Dave as you recall the section from Cape May to NY Harbour was the most tough. We fought big ocean waves the whole way and burned a lot more fuel per hour on that leg of the trip. The total amount of fuel from Wilmington NC to Stony Point was 1,311.7 gallons, and the portion that was from Cape May to Stony Point was 269.7 gallons. It was a fantastic trip, and for the most part we got lucky with the weather. The intercoastal was really nice but there were a lot of no-wake zones. No matter what direction you elect to go, just being on the water for that long is a fantastic time...
 
Wow I didn't realize we went through that much fuel I'm glad you paid, by the way did I say thank you? It was a great trip!
 
With 17 days you probably have enough time. I remember when Art did the trip he really enjoyed it, but at the same time it seemed like there was a lot of travel time. They also ended up having to alter plans because of an early season hurricane.

I've been wanting to do the trip myself but on the other hand I normally go down to the Annapolis boat show every year and stay a couple extra days and have driven around a lot of the area. After doing this a few times my impression is that the cruising grounds we have east of us (Newport, Martha's Vineyard, Essex, Cuttyhunk, Block, etc) are actually nicer than the Chesapeake in addition to being easier to get to. Maybe if I was there by boat I'd change my mind, and it is something different, but having visited a lot of the cruising stops by car (Annapolis, Baltimore Inner Harbor, St Michaels, etc) I'm not as eager to head that way instead of going east as I was in the past.

What's the furthest east you've gone? Have you been past Newport?
 
come on down to the Chesapeake bay, pass the cities and head for the rivers and little islands. there's a bunch of us that meet up with you I'm sure. and bring that other Trojan with you.
 
Who me?. I have been asking Mike if he wanted to go. Presently this is our plan. I need to plot the trip, hours, and fuel burn.
