Currently family boating in a 1995 Baja 236 Cuddy with a 7.4 Mercruiser and Bravo 1. Two batteries on a Perko switch.
It's been an expensive season without the gas. Seems like every other outing has a mechanical repair attached; little things that end up costing a bit.
The latest is a starting issue. It appears that on the last voyage, the lock cylinder of the ignition stayed in the START position without my notice. After cruising to a cove for dinner (10 minutes), I noticed I had to turn the key two positions to OFF. I would guess the starter continued to crank for that time period. I did not notice a whining noise with the thru-hull and the excitement of being on the water. The rubber housing on the key insert appears to have caused the stickiness as the cylinder functions properly without it in place.
Currently, when turning the key to the START position, there is just a click noise from the engine. It does not turn over. Repeating the OFF to START sequence about ten times will finally catch the flywheel and, if all is warm and primed, the engine fires.
The batteries are fine. Core tested at the beginning of the season and well maintained on a Guest charger. I cleaned the contacts intensively and still have the same results.
If it is a fried starter is it an option for rebuild?
