Anybody in Chesapeake City around 11:00am this morning? It was like a scene from Caddyshack. Big assed euro trash yacht came cruising up towards the no wake at full speed, guy must have been throwing at least a five foot wake; and for added impact, he was far towards the south side of the channel. I guess everybody assumed he would slow, but never did. The size wave he sent towards the dock was horrifying. I tried to get local CG on the VHF, but Baltimore and Cape May stations were the only ones responding. Several boats put in calls that they were damaged, I'd be amazed if there were no injuries. As I was coming out of radio range, it didn't seem like anybody had a vessel name, or any other info; curious to hear how it ended.

You know after getting on some guy about getting crushed by a big boat plowing water with a power pole and people saying you are responsible for your wake period...I figured I got my due.....I was there for that and also for some guy near Turkey Point running not right read returning but right up the greens throwing a MONSTER......never saw a five or six foot wake....I did..

I pulled in to the harbor about a half hour after the event. They knew the name of the boat and the marine police was there a few hours taking damage reports. I understand the dock was damaged quite a bit also. I spend a good bit of time in that area and have often wondered why there seems to be no enforcement of the no wake zone.

not only is there no enforcement, there isn't even prominent 'no wake' signs. Glad they got the name of the boat; hopefully no one was seriously injured; I still can't believe the size of the wave that entered the basin - I figured it was going to destroy the docks. I guess the guy in the yacht never came back?

My friends were there, untied their boats and chased the boat down: "Sea-Doo for Dad", a 108' Sunseeker. The captain flipped them off and kept going eastbound. After turning southbound into Delaware Bay, he shut off his AIS. (See http://aprs.fi/static/954990382 )Apparently, the USCG were set to board him in Cape May, but he blew by them.

Damages reported to me were people knocked down on the docks, swim platform torn off, numerous scrapes and scratches, broken dock hardware, and significant hull/deck joint damage to one boat tied to the sea wall by Bayard house. Reprehensible.

Chuck -

How far from Chesapeake City did your friends eventually catch up to the perp? Did they try to stop the perp, or did they just catch up to get his boat name? After he blew by the USCG in Cape May, was the perp later detained? It will be interesting to hear the outcome. I bet the perp's insurance will be paying out nquite a sum.

Looks like she's flagged in the Cayman Islands. A 108' boat, that can just about hit 50mph. And was probably doing close that when she passed the basin. Insane. I've seen people oblivious to no wake zones before, but never like this.

"Arneson surface drives power the P-108 – weighing more than 80 tons – to an impressive top of 43 knots". Besides C_spray, who else's friends have a fleet that can catch this guy at WOT?

I would be interested in what action the CG took ... hard to believe they could not/would not stop him. A shot across the bow usually works!!

I was in slip 11 right next to a 45 Excalibur and a 57 foot Carver MY. My boat is a 25 Active Thunder. My wife was thrown to the dock and came very close to being crushed between the boats and the dock. She sustained a few bruises on her knees and her foot. After the waves stopped a friend and I took chase in his 29 Baja and took pictures of the boat, name and the hailing port (Georgetown, C.I. Yea...Cayman Islands.) The boats name was an exact copy of the Sea Doo emblem so we are figuring its some azzhat big wig from Sea Doo. Either way with all the info we gave the police and pictures we have his life will be made a bit more miserable than it is. It was the scariest incident I have ever been involved in in almost 25 years on the Bay. Don't worry Sea Doo for Dad.....I'll look for you in Ft.Lauderdale when I'm in town.

The coast gaurd did nothing for us other than to tell us to file a report. I had respect for them.....not anymore.

And the Coast Guard did NOTHING?

Hey, John - Welcome to BoaterEd.

Did you say that someone had reported SD4Dad in New York City? When I looked him up on the link above, he showed up as moored in northern end of the shipping channel of Delaware Bay. I figure that he probably turned off his AIS transmitter to avoid being tracked, as the last transmission was at 11:34 AM on Sunday, 7/5/09. I also found it interesting that the boat was listed as 15 meters long; it's at least twice that...

<Update> Check out http://www.marinetraffic.com/AIS/datasheet.aspx?datasource=ITINERARIES&MMSI=954990382 He spent the Fourth moored next to the Aquarium in Baltimore. I just found a record of him at the marina in front of the former WTC site on the east side of the Hudson as of midnight Monday morning. This guy is on his way somewhere in a hurry.

By the way, the boat's transmitter source is "ZCYD8", and it's MMSI VHF number is 954990382. I'm going to add him to my MMSI directory and give him a shout next time I see him. (By the way, all this information is in the public domain. No such luck in terms of the owner's identity, though...)

Not sure where or who I heard that from Chuck. Thanks for the info. The more I think about this the more pissed off I get. Arrogant azzhole!!!

Extensive property damage, several personal injuries, leaving the scene? Why didn't the local water cops get involved? Local law enforcement should have been all over this guy.

If this boat is indeed owned by someone from Bombardier Recreational Products, he will also have to answer to this, from BRP's site:

I had a buddy telling me about this yesterday...I could not believe it. He was up that ways for the weekend.

Here's what the name looks like...

sdfd.jpg

being foreign flagged, he needs to follow certain procedures incl. notices of arrivals when changing districts, advising customs when he changes slip and in some case, due to his size, he may need to have a pilot on board. I dont' remember the size limit for the Ches. but large foreign yachts need pilots.

if he failed to take a pilot or advised homeland sec. of his location changes, he faces stiff fines as well.

maybe a call to homeland sec. is in order to make it a little more painful...

The 142' Palmer Johnson at the end of my dock doesn't require a pilot. Captain can take the boat in and out of NY Harbor without a pilot.

He does have to check in with Customs each time he arrives at a new dock.

4 Customs officers were at his boat this weekend going over paperwork with them.

I hope this Captain is brought up on charges and has his ticket taken from him (provided he has a US ticket).
