I recently purchased mercury dinghy no sooner do I buy it my mercury 9.9 breaks down I had the motor repaired this weekend I got to test it for the first. This brings me the the question why can't I get on plane with this setup? A friend bought the same dink and he has Yamaha 9.9 same issue. The bow comes out way to high and there is now way to get it to level out. A dock neighbor claims he had the same issue with hi and he added a dolfin fin to his motor and the problem went away.
Any thoughts welcome!

Yeah, more weight forward would help.

Check the pin on the motor, maybe it is tilted too far up

And if that doesn’t work, a Doelfin or similar foil should help.

My Avon same size, soft-bottom , %$#rb2rb2@gr5tgr5t plywood floor panels, planes with a 6hp but I have to put the tank at the bow and sometimes use an O/B tiller extension to get myself in the center of the dink .
You can add a lidded 5 gal bucket of water ...secured... to the bow to help too.
My 6hp has no foil/fin on the A/V plate but I'm sure that would help.
Cheap non-adjustable tabs would help too if you can find room for them.

Or.... maybe you could try putting these foils on the dink?

Even with a second person sit in front on the bow tube it won't plante out!

Properly inflated? You’d be amazed how many problems under inflation will cause. For a Hypalon inflatable, you should be inflating until the relief valve triggers.

At that HP and size getting on plane was always a challenge for us. As was said make sure the O.B. is trimmed in all of the way. Once at 15HP with a hard bottom getting on plane was much easier.

I should have mentioned this is a hard bottom and yes fully inflated.
I have a mercury 9.9 and my friend has a Yamaha 15 we both bought the same dink and have the same problem.
Someone suggested to install a hydrofoil on the motor, he claims he had the same problem and this resolved it.
I noticed the several others dinghies have them including a couple of friends that bought their dinghy complete with it already installed from the factory.
I'm thinking it may be worth a try.

Put the doel fin on it, I have them on mine and it planes fine

As posted, Doel-Fin/hydrofoil should make a major improvement

Again have you checked the pin on the motor? If it is not tilted all the way down it may not plane but I really think you ll need a foil

Had the same problem with ours. A hydrofoil corrected this issue. Our 10ft dinghy will fly now with our 9.8hp outboard.

There is no pin on my mercury it ratchets up then all the way down there are three setting for how far down it will go and it is a low as it can.
I will try the fin.

I have the WM Hypalon 310 single floor RIB with a newer 9.9 Mercury on it. It too, will not bow down unless someone is up front. But it will get up on plane and moves along nicely. My next step is to install a Dolfin for that very reason. If I'm on it alone...forget it.

We ordered a no drill clamp on fin hopefully it does the trick. The dink is a double floor Rib 130 lbs I was told the 9.9 would be great I hope it works out. I sould know by Sunday.

130 lb dinghy with a 4-stroke 9.9 plus an operator on the back is a lot of weight to push and get out of the hole. I'm sure you know that a 4 stroke weights a lot more than a similarly powered 2 stroke.

For reference, I had an old soft-bottom plywood floored Avon (very light boat) with an 8 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke. It would get on plane with me and 2 young kids. I then got an AB RIB listed at 109 lbs. It wouldn't plane at all. I upgraded to a (used) 15 hp 2 stroke Evinrude and it flies. The weights of the motors are about the same. The bow does still point up but the power of the 15 hp gets me out of hole quickly.

As others have said, you need more power or more hydrodynamic lift to get the stern of the boat out of the hole. The lift comes either from fins on the motor or lifting tabs on the transom.

By the way, I love my motor. I took an outboard repair class last fall to learn how to work on it. I got to tear down a bunch of components and repair some things on it - including some sketchy fixes by a former owner. Runs so much better now. It's a bit of a gas hog, but the power to weight ratio for a dinghy is fantastic.
