So i finally set up my dinghy today. Everything went perfect till i got to setting the engine on the transom.

I have two engines. 1 is a 6hp evinrude and the other is a 14hp evinrude. Both are short shaft 15" motors. When i placed them one the transom both cavitation plates sit about 2 inches below the bottom of the boat

How much of a problem is this and can it be easily fixed?

If you're trying to plane it may make a difference. At 'dinghy speed' it won't make any difference at all. I don't know how big your dinghy is, but 14 hp sounds like a lot (as in, maybe too much).

I have the 14hp tuned down. Cant open it full throttle.

Ive read that 1-2 inches is normal, but it doesn't seem normal in real life while looking at it....

14 hp doesn't sound like that much.

I have a 10ft RIB with a 25hp and a 13 whaler with a 40hp.

Its an 8ft raft

The size isnt important to me. Its the plate sitting 2 inches below the bottom of the transom that concerns me. Where do all of yours sit?

I think you are over thinking this.

I have never measured mine but I believe the plates on both boats are below the bottom. It has never caused any issue.

You could get a 2" piece of wood, place on top of the transom to raise the motor. Take it out and see if it makes any difference. If it does, have it glassed in place.

Anyone who wants a pic, post your e-mail. I cannot not post pics while at work

Better have it below the bottom than above. Try it and see what happens.

I thinks the 14 is way too much for an 8' dink, what is it rated for?

The 14 is too much power, I have it set so I cant open it up all the way. I have a smaller little boat that I can use the 14 on.

When I responded I pictured a small inflatable or wood or fiberglass dink in the 8-10' range, don't ask me why. They're generally rated for only a few hp. As it turned out the OP owns pretty much what I pictured.

Your RIB and Whaler are much more capable boats. They're rated for much higher hp than an 8' inflatable.

So get this. I spoke to a tech guy at the manufacturer of the dinghy. He assured me that the motor sitting 2inches below the boat is perfect, and thats how its supposed to be...

I sent him pictures and he said its sitting perfect.

Makes no sense..

Engine Hp ratings for boats are more than just power output vs. hull size, it's physical weight added to the transom too - and on a dink, that may be more of a factor than the actual Hp. Your sinking the aft of the boat excessively.

Max weight on the transom is 84lbs. Engine weighs 78lbs

Its the same weight as a 9.9. The 14hp is just a 9.9 block with a larger carb and a different mid and lower unit.

Ive taken all this into account.
