This is blasphemous since I work for a local cable provider but I'm looking to see how everyone uses direct tv. I have cable at home but would look to maybe get a seasonal subscription for the boat. Does anyone have something that is automatically activated and turned off for spring through fall?

While we do not have seasonal subscriptions, what I have now is DISH. We used Directv on the boat for years. DISH, has a wake up facility on their website, and, you can change your zip code and wind up with the local news and channels! To my knowledge Directv does not have these.
I always had to call up Directv to get the installation address changed. However, we used Directv from the St. Lawrence all the way down to Great Exuma (very weak down there with mimimum channels, Staniel Cay is about the limit).

I have Optimum at home & DirecTv on the boat. It's my understanding I just reach out to the to put the account on hold to till the spring. I may keep one set live and use the boat as a 'Man cave' as I got the NFL package

But can you change the installation address? If you travel with the boat beyond your local coverage area, what happens?

Its my understanding that as DTV knows the install is on a boat i can change the local coverage, not something i need to test until late 2019

I suspect my direct TV when my boat is put away for the winter, then reactivate it in the spring. There is a small monthly charge.

I’ve got Fios at home and Direct TV on the boat. I was going to put my Direct TV on hold for the winter months, it’s easy enough to do, but I wound up watching it through the app on my iPad in the gym every morning, and when I crawl in the shrinkwrap door to putter around on the boat in the cold months I put cable news on.
I’ve got the basic minimum package, and since I’m an AT&T wireless family plan customer I get a pretty good price on it so it was worth my keeping it going.

Ok this is kinda odd. I suspend my direct Tv acct for winter, but at no charge . Then in spring I call or I set a date for auto activation. I do same for the Sat weather. again no additional charge. With that said Direct TV programming sucks . NEVER EVER anything to watch . all the movies are so damn old its pathetic. So now we stream netflix when we have wifi.

As for billing address. They don't care and there is no outside coverage area. We have direct TV in other places all one acct. no issues. ( land, boat in different states no issues )

Look at Dish Outdoors with a pay as you go account. It allows you to easily suspend the account and change the local area. This is relatively new for Dish.

I agree. Thought about possibly getting Direct TV at home since I have it on the boat, AT&T offered me a killer deal since we have their cell phone service, but the programming really does suck. Lots of shopping channels and other stuff I’d never watch.
I mostly use it for the cable news and financial channels. For entertainment, we stream Netflix or Amazon Prime on the boat by using my iPad as a hotspot.

All good stuff. I will most likely just go with wifi/netflix which....poor me, requires a significant TV upgrade :-)....

Thanks everyone.

Maybe not if you have an iPad or iPhone.
I’ve got smart TV’s on the boat now, but before I upgraded to them I used my iPad with an Apple AV adapter and an HDMI cord to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on the old TV’s. It worked great!
No HDMI inlet on TV, still no problem. You just need an HDMI to component video cord instead of HDMI to HDMI.
You could do the exact same thing with an iPhone.
All you need is the Netflix and Amazon Prime Video Apps.
