Was running a pair of top mount starter Mercruisers last night, lights off doing a dark/spark test with the lights off checking for loose hi tension type arcs you can only see in total darkness. While doing that, the rubber cover in the bell housing was off and caught it out of the corner of my eye,A nice orange spark every time the starter drive engaged the flywheel.Nice to Know Huh? Is it is a fluke with the hardness of the steel involved and it should not happen or is this the physical properties of steel and cannot be avoided? On bottom mount starters this effect would be devastating.I want to know more about this.
