Good friend of mine is looking for a for a good divorce attorney, any suggestions?

A good divorce attorney???? An oxymoron if I've ever heard of one!

Their all designed to suck blood out of a stone. ;)

Try and find out who the wife is choosing, then choose that attorney before she does. Women seem to be able to choose the better attorney.

Hate to be able to refer but Lloyd Friedland saved me years ago.

Probably won't remember me, but cleaned up a bad situation. One of the only people I've ever met that intimidated me. If you need more info call me.

Agree, there is no good divorce attorney! They all will suck you dry 15 minutes at a time.
You call and talk about their vacation, boom, they bill you for 15 minutes.
Mine had all these yellow pieces of paper with my name and time and date on them.
Each one represented a billable convo, even if you call and have a 1 minute quesiton, boom 15 minute bill.

My advice on divorce, is settle it together, then go find an attorney to write it up. Once an attorney gets in your ear and hers kiss about $80K goodbye!
Unless your fighting for custody, there is no reason to get a divorce attorney. It's equitable distribution in NY. Divide it 50/50.
if she don't work and you do, give her 5 years alimony to get on her feet. Done!

I agree with Dave completely, but if one or the other want to fight there is no winning. I was separated for 6 years fighting over stupidity, but I couldn't reason with her. She got less at the end than what I offered her six years earlier. She had $50,000 in attorney fees. It was unbelievable.

There is no fight worth winning. I had the same gig Bill.
We made a deal, we were both happy with it.
Then she tried to squeeze me for more, I wouldn't budge.
We both got attorney's and $80K later we were back at the original deal minus $80K.
IF both sides can have cool heads and go into it knowing 50/50 is the deal, then agree to joint custody, then it's easier. Unless one parent is a complete slime, there should be no reason they can't do that.

Marriage is Grand, Divorce is 100 Grand!

Just food for thought.

Once you find an attorney, ask them to name the three worst attorneys they had to deal with in divorce court. Then go have a consoltation with each of them. (even if it cost you money) Your spouse will no longer be able to use them, and it might save you a ton of money in the long run.

A good Divorce attorney.......

Is a dead one...... :)

Just sayin....

You guys are all bitter. The wife is a divorce lawyer and she is great. Doesn't suck the life out of you. All of her clients are happy and refer her all the time..

All of you just picked the wrong lawyers..........

Holy crap......I can't even imagine divorcing a divorce attorney.......lol

Neither can I. I'm married 25 years this October.

Cheaper to keep her ;0

The problem isn't the attorney we picked, it's the attorney they picked. No offense intended, a good portion of divorce attorneys feed into the "your can get everything" theory that a lot of people get sucked in. Especially those with vengeance on their mind.

There is a middle road between hiring adversarial attorneys and putting together your own agreement after which you end up needing an attorney or two anyway. I took the Mediation Attorney route. I think that she cost between $6-8k in total. It is pretty much 50/50 on assets but if you are the big earner be prepared to pay out Maintenance for a number of years. I don't remember her name. Try on-line.

Billy, hence my comment, once you have had a consult with an attorney, that attorney, can represent the other party.

Avoid the big firms with the big staffs and the big advertising budget. You will pay for all of that. Most of them end up charging double what my wife will charge for the same or many much worse representation.

The more you fight, the more you pay.

Do not call your lawyer with little stuff. Save it up and then make the call and get your moneys worth. Stay out of court if you can until you need the judge to sign off on your deal.

The 15 minute billing crap is bottom feeder BS.

I am amazed at the billings that I see from these firms.

Find a firm with one or two reputable lawyers and you will save yourself big dollars over the big guys.

How is this boating related?

Mediation works I have heard.
Key is for both sides to recognize it is over and agree to move forward with a fair deal.
That is a hard statement for most because noone likes to be taken advantage of.
There are lots of factors we don't mention in the 50/50 deal.
Anything you come into a marriage with is yours.
Anything you obtain during the marriage is both of yours.
I obtained my master's degree during my marriage.
At one point, her attorney presented us with a list showing my salary with master's and without and tried to lay claim to half the difference in my salary for the rest of my life! WTF!

Most lawyer's look for leverage and will dig anything out they can. The concept is to throw mud at each other and make a deal that is most favorable for your client. In the end the lawyer wins and you lose.
