LOL, My neighbor wants to trade me his brand new, still in the box Katadyn PowerSurvivor 40e and extended cruise kit for mine, even up.

Bob,

The output of the 40e is only rated at 1.5 GPH. I think you should stick with what you built. Bill's old 80e (mine now :-) is rated at 4gph, and while it works perfectly for us, I wouldn't want any less. I run the genny in the evenings for hot water and battery charging and the 4gph then mixed with running some underway works great. But 1.5 would not cut it.

Yes, I was converned about that so we went out with another friend who has one in his boat, a 32' SeaRay. He and his wife have had the 40e for a couple of years and swear buy it and say it gives them all the water they need. so, I wanted to see for myself.

With the Cruising kit and boost pump the 40e will actually put out about 3.5 gph.(measured by filling milk jugs) Then we unhooked the boost pump and, yes, it slowed Waaaay down.

Plus the 40e only draws about 4 amps.

With the boost pump hooked up and running it underway it put out a bit over 3.5 gph. For me that'll do quite adequately.

I like having the ability to make my own water for a variety of reasons. My vessel is almost self sustaining other than the fuel needed to move it or the small amount of fuel needed to run the generator. I built my vessel with "the mindset of the last refuge" in mind. With the large AGM house banks, solar array, generator, inverter, wind generator (not installed yet), watermaker, dual voltage refrig, sanitation treatment and satellite communications I could anchor safetly and run everything but the air conditioning off the grid and or without fuel. I wanted to be able to run all necessary systems from 12 volts. This is why I chose the 12 volt watermaker it's capacity is limited but I don't need to run the inverter or generator to make great water.
Call me "nuts"!
Bill

Bob, I'd also love your plans and parts list. Can you send to dudaduma on the Y (Yahoo) network please? I don't really need a watermaker, but I need something boat related to keep me busy over the next few months.

Thanks in advance!!

Bob,

I too would like to see the plans/parts list for your watermaker. Can you send a copy to wittefam at pacbell dot net

Thanks, in advance

I can see that. I've been thinking my 80e puts out a heck of a lot more than 4gph as it doesn't take very much running to keep us going when cruising. I've got the boost pump and cruising kit too. The dang boost pump was what made me spend days on my Marine Elegance installation instead of just hours. I had split the raw water intake to the head to also go to the watermaker. When I installed the Elegance (fresh water model), I had to move the pump, and it wasn't fun in the new location (to say the least).

How many gallons of water are needed in systems such as the 40/80E for flushing? The amount is most likely a function of the membrane size. I expect that what I am building will require at least 5 gallons of flush after each usage.

My Spectra requires 2.5 gallons for the flush cycle, or every 5 days unattended in the auto flush mode.
Bill

That is not bad at all. Spectra's efficiency with the Clark pump offers advantages for 12 volt systems. Oh! That last thing anyone will call you is nuts! You have something that meets YOUR needs, that is what is important.

The 40e takes about 1 gallon to flush and 1/2 to pickle. But, Katadyn recommends not flushing very often.

BTW, I decided to make the trade with my neighbor. We'll do the swap next week.

Bob-- Isn't that a lot of work just making the swap?

Kurt I think your 80E w/ the boost pump as configured and depending on water temperature should do 6.5 to 7 gallons per hour.

Nope, 6 bolts and 4 wires. Actually I have already removed mine. Took all of about 20 minutes. My boost pump is identicle to his so it and the pre-filters and all plumbing stay as it is. All I have to do is install the 40e assembly and wire it in.

I'm actually doing this as a favor to him. Mine will fit into his avalilable space much easier that the 40e and will have much easier accessability for maint and repairs.

Bill, I think you're right. This thing puts out a lot more than 4gph. We've never been short of water while cruising since I bought it from you, and I don't run it that much (just when running the genny to charge the batteries in the evenings and making hot water).
