Dredging?

Next bitch session...

Being SPBM and Patsy's are so shallow at low tide has it ever been discussed to dredge the area? I'm sure the cost is tremendous and the permits are probably piled a 1000 high, but is it that unreasonable?

I managed a project to dredge our yacht club almost 20 years ago in Edgewater. At that time it was about $250,000. Permits...Corps of Engineers, State, EPA, local...then permits to dump at sea...the currents had it mostly back in 5 or 6 years. Subsequently we looked into dumping the dredge spoils on land...very complicated...building special berms...I think they called it "floculation", where the solids were trapped in a pit, the water drained off and then the solids had to be trucked to a landfill...if you dropped any on the road en-route, you were subject to a huge fine.
The club gave it up. Hard to fight Mother Nature.
 
They could dredge out all of Stony Point Bay and the marinas and put the sludge right in the middle to create a nice island.
 
What if we pumped it into Haverstraw just past the fuel docks?
 
Our club did it, so it CAN be done. from what I heard, the biggest issue was where to put the "spoils" (dredged silt). We had an area to have a berm built and the spoils settled for a year then were used for top soil.

It can be done. Once permits were had, the process was amazingly simple looking. A small work float with a mechanical auger looking thingy that went down to 6', max at low water. From there, they floated hoses and pipe to pump the water/silt to the berm about 1/8 mile away. I'm guessing it took a couple of months but don't recall.

In the end, it's about where to put the spoils and getting the permit.
 
Permits were applied for and followed up on by a member of the club (work time) so I don't have a number there.
Actual dredging was ~$200,000.

In our case, we have 110 slips so about 2k per slip.
 
My memory is pretty fuzzy on this but 5 or 6 years ago Tara as part of her duties was working very hard to put together a plan to dredge the marina areas in Stony Point Bay. See it really doesn't make sense to do just one marina since at that time there were 4 separate marinas all in a row. (Willow Cove, Stony Point Bay Marina, Patsy's and Belle Harbor. Due to mergers there are now only 2). I even remember them doing lots of core samples to determine the bottom composition. There was a lot of quiet excitement building over the possibility of deeper water in our marinas.

The proposal required the agreement of all 4 marinas to go forward with the plan and there was agreement from 3 of the 4 marinas. Anybody want to hazard a guess as to which marina caused the plan to fall apart?????????

I remember Gene at SPBM telling me that they had the permit to dredge but no money to do so.

I doubt it will ever get done.

Someone with deep enough pockets should jump on the oppurtunity. They can probably get someone to dredge it for a reduced cost and the payback will come down the road.

I recall hearing that the HVMTA was working with all the marinas in our area to get the area dredged. Rommers statement is pretty much what I remember. PBM was also in the group that was involved with the project. I thought they were in the part of the project where samples had to be taken. It seems I remember there was a site availwble to dump but the permits and sampling was not completed. Im not sure what ever happened after that. I would guess money probably dried up since this is a very expensive project but I really dont know.

The good news is I dont have to worry about water since Hogan does a weekly dredging in front of me. Opps I really didnt mean to say that. Everyone thinks I wait to be last to leave because Im a nice guy and help them leave dock and the real reason is Hogan dredges for us before we pull out. Thanks Mike....
