drilling gelcoat from behind

I'm installing a fish finder and need to drill a 3/4" hole in my dash from underneath, due to windshield interference. I'm concerned about chipping the gelcoat coming from the backside. Other than taping the spot, is there anything I can do to minimize the chipping? Thanks in advance.
 
Once you get close to coming thru, drill the last 32nd of an inch witht he bit going backwards.
 
Use a holecutter, and as said above run backwards when almost through. A small centering hole first would help determine the thickness.
 
find a bezel or some sort of cover for the hole and chip outs
 
Thanks for the replies. I'll be sure to run backwards and the hole saw sounds like a good idea. I have a bezel of sorts, I got a plastic "plug" that's made to insert in a hole to plug with a little bezel around the top. I drilled a hole through it to make an insert after the hole is done.
 
Cover the top with masking tape, and then drill from underneath.
 
Consider getting a right-angle drill. I got a DeWalt cordless one last year and it's great.
