Dropping a Mooring

What are the rules for dropping a mooring? I know when I boated on the North Shore we used to go to this cover over by Port Jeff Harbor where people would drop private moorings.

What rule says I can or can't drop a private mooring in Hemlock cove?

I see one for sale on Craiglist for $150. Sure would make anchoring easy and sleeping on the hook with no worries!
 
Dave are you looking to drop one in Tasmania???

Most places now require a permit ($$$$$)
 
Gee, thanks Brad, that will come in handy if I am in Tasmania....wherever that is!

I want to drop one in Hemlock Cove. Just pull in, hook up, done! well, probably will have to kick someone off of it who does not belong on it first, but thats easy!
 
I can just see it now.............moorings every 10 feet at Hemlock!

That's the problem. You'll come sailing into the cove and there it is...Joe Blow tied to your mooring with a couple of his buddies rafted off with a cooler of empties...good luck. That's even if the mooring ball isn't destroyed from the 50 or so boats that tied up to it during the week!
 
It seems to work on the North Shore. Like I said, there are private moorings in, I think it is called Conscious Cove over by PJ. The mooring will have to say private and hoep for the best. My question was not what everyone's opinion on it was, but is it allowed or legal?
 
From what I have seen on the laws relating to ownership of the navigable waters and lands under them, primary ownership belongs to the town, Babylon in this case. It should be up to them. Then the DEC and ACE may have additional rights to have input on it, because the state also retains some ownership of the public trust lands, and the ACE of course controls navigation. But the question is probably best addressed to the town. Maybe you can call them and ask.

There are some moorings in the area, for example at West Gilgo. I know someone who owns one, and I think he said his is deeded but that he was one of the last people to be granted one of those deeded moorings on the Bay (10 years or so ago.) Granted by whom and how I do not recall.

I would not be optimistic.
