I'm thinking about bringing the boat out east next year. Yesterday we looked at a few marinas.

Treasure Cove - Riverhead
Larry's Lighthouse - Riverhead
New Suffolk - New Suffolk
New Suffolk - Cutchogue
Port of egypt - Southhold
Brick Cove - West of Greenport
Townsends - Greenport
Brewers Stirling Basin and Greenport - Greenport

All were nice, some had more ammenities than others. We have to make a decision as to wether it is worth the extra ride to save fuel on the boat trips we would like to make or stay in Riverhead for driving convience. We live in Babylon. The ride to Treasure Cove was 40 minutes. I know yesterday was not very nice, but the ride home from Greenport was 1:30 with moderate traffic.
I know Rob is in Treasure Cove and likes it, it is very nice. Anyone else experience the marinas ( or any other marinas ) or the commute.

Thanks

Billy K.

Billy, I think any marina east of Riverhead may be a commuting nightmare on a regular basis. Although you may be able to adjust your schedule on Fridays, remember so can others heading to the Hamptons or anywhere east. Well maybe the guys in the helicopters won't affect traffic.

If I had the ability ($$) to keep my regular slip and head east as a vacation spot for the summer, it would be Montauk. I would keep the boat at a marina in Montauk and arrange to have long weekends and always be commuting opposite of traffic. Also, you can take a train into work, for me the city and then go home a few days then head out by train. Just a thought.

Oh yes, I do know a Marina a little east of you.. $100 a foot with nice views and prompt services. You know you will have at least two couples that will be friendly dock neighbors.... It is a place where many of us weak and bewildered folks end up after the LIYC experience. ;)

Billy,
As you mentioned Rob is in Treasure Cove, since Rob has had his boat there multiple seasons, I would expect it is a good place. The Riverhead ride (by car) is going to be your best bet IMHO. The woman that runs the docks is a really sweet person and very helpful. We stayed out there for a few days a couple years back.

Also the pricing if booked early is pretty fair IMHO.

Best of luck and let us know what you decide.

Walter

Guys,
I come out every Friday to my boat in Hampton Bays. Traffic is usually not so bad until you get east of exit 66 on Sunrise Hwy. For those that live west of Glen Cove road, that would be see the most traffic on Friday afternoon. Once you get past exit 60 on 495 it opens up. I commute 40 mins to my boat and its worth it for boating/fishing in this area.

I think it depends on how flexible your schedule is and where you plan to take the boat to for your trips. From a driving standpoint Riverhead would be ideal but if you're going to be heading to CT, Block, RI, etc every weekend might be better off being a little further east. Rob, I know you're always mentioning how great the east end destinations are, but do you spend much time in Peconic Bay or always heading out into the Sound?

As far as the marinas, a friend of mine moved his boat to Brewers Greenport this season and is very happy with the marina and is already talking about staying there again next season. I stop at Port of Egypt from time to time on a friend's boat for bait and fuel, it's pretty much a fishing marina (I think 90% of the boats there are Grady Whites) so if you're looking for a place to hang out on weekends you aren't heading somewhere not sure you'll have the type of atmosphere you're used to with everyone hanging out and bbqing.

If I were to keep my boat out east I'd want it at Montauk but I fish a lot so would want to be close to the point and open water. It also gives quick access to cruising grounds north and east also. I had my boat there for 2 1/2 weeks last season and in that time made the drive back and forth 3 times. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought, leaving early or late it was 2 hours from Lindenhurst just about every trip except a Friday afternoon when I hit some traffic. I don't think I'd want to do it all season but for a month or so during the summer, taking long weekends the whole time, would be nice.

We moved to Brewers Sterling this year and could not be happier. Its like we moved to a mini resort. The place is spotless, the dock staff even picks up butts from the parking lot!
It cost no more than the non-frills marina we were at in Huntington. Service cost are fair but since they really do a good job its hi value.
Yeah the drive from Huntington can be as much as 90 min, but I like to drive and the north road(48) through wine country is a nice one.
I have made it in under an hr-don't ask ;-)

Remember for every 30 min by car you could be saving hours of running time/fuel via the boat –BIG $’s

There is a 42 Silverton near me and the guy comes from Hoboken!

I think we’re here to stay
PM me if you have any questions

There's a nice marina on the Shinnecock Canal plus there's Strongs Marina in Mattituck (peconic side)

Andy,

Thanks for the update. I liked Sterling as well as Greenport, both owned by Brewers. We would have picked one of them if we were going to use the boat more. This year we were dock mary's more then we would have liked. We found a place in Patchogue we love with alot of entertainment and its closer to home. My uncle used to keep his boat at Sterling, and he was a very fussy guy so I know what you say is true. I'm glad you found somewhere you like and maybe in a couple of years we will move our boat further east. Thanks again,

Billy K.

John,
Were doing a lot of anchoring in the peconic . Hanging by Robbins island is a lot fun . So many place to explore . Anchoring in the harbors all around shelter is great as well. Won't run out of places that's for sure.

Rob

We just ran the dink from treasure cove to the locks . What a blast . The locks were open . I thought I was going to get sucked tru .

Brewer's Sterling is a great marina, I highly recommend it.

Rob,

You finally answered my question a year after I posted it ;) Actually it's funny, I was thinking the other day about trying to find this thread. I ended up keeping my boat at Montauk for 3 months this season (wasn't planning it when this was first discussed). I'll post some comments and observations about keeping the boat out east later on.

I lived in wading river and moved my 36 sailboat from riverhead to brewers in greenport, what a great town and location and marina.
Sailed to CT.,sag harbor, shelter island, block and many other places and traffic on north roads good and bad, traffic in hamptons and montauk bad very bad and really long very bad.
