I have an 86 34c silverton with a "travler style" head (reg. style head with build in holding tank not a portable). I'm trying to figure out if anyone has installed/has a setup like this using a elctro scan/lectrasan. if so does it need to have the hold n treat control or can I just install a macerator pump wired to the electro scan unit? Any suggests would help at this point I'm trying to get this boat inspected for an MSD sticker here in Alabama but don't want to break the bank installing a new complete system. Needless to say we use the boat to the point we might as well be live aboards so something has to give 8 gallon holding tank doesn't last very long.

Vic will have the best answers, but I think he might be traveling at the moment. So, I'll give it a shot.

You've got two options depending on any NDZ's in your area (No Discharge Zones - meaning even treated waste can't be discharged). You can remove/by-pass the holding tank and "flush" directly into an Electro Scan (LectraSan is no longer made). The unit will process each flush and discharge treated waste. Or, you can also purchase the Hold-n-Treat control. With this option, when you flush, the waste goes into your holding tank. When the tank gets near full, the Electro Scan starts running cycles to empty it. I've installed the latter method with a 20 gallon holding tank. Thus, if I get stuck in an NDZ (only two areas here in MD, so not a problem), I can take the key out of the Hold-n-Treat control and be fully legal.

In your case, in AL, if you're doing coastal cruising, I'd say perhaps remove the holding tank and just go for the Electro Scan unit itself?

A Marine Traveler head is legal as-is, but it is not compatible with a Raritan treatment system. Being that the traveler is a drop-down toilet, similar to what is used in RV's, it has no discharge pump.

The treatment systems require that the effluent be PUMPED into and out of them; they do not have pumps of their own. They are dependent upon the pumping ability of the toilet to get anything into or out of them. Once commissioned, treatment systems stay full all the time, with fully and partially-treated waste inside them. It all works by displacement - what is being pumped into them to be treated at one end, forces an equal amount of already treated effluent out the other end - which goes overboard.

So if you want to add a treatment system to the boat, you'll have to replace the head with one that includes a discharge pump.

I'm a little confused on this one then. I have a thru hull and macerator pump as well as a deck pump out installed. my thought was that i could use the macerator pump wired to the electra scan (for timing and flushing purposes) and have basically a modifed hold n treat style system with the electra scan being the last inline the macerator pump would basically feed the unit like say for instance a crown head would only instead of being staight from the head it would be coming from the holding tank. if it helps any the head is an old mansfield (which probably is outdated to begin with)

I suppose it could be done - do you have a remote holding tank as well as the one that's built into the head? The Hold 'N Treat controller can be purchased separately, to use with an existing holding tank and macerator pump, but I'm not completely sure it would work with the Marine Traveler toilet. In theory, it will work, but I don't know if it's ever been tried.

no i don't have another holding tank, that was why i was trying to figure out if anyone had tried it or if it would work. In theory like u confirmed it should work. needless to say with the macerator and thru-hull (no lockable y-valve)I can't pass the MSD inspection here. While the sticker/inspection isn't required if boarded it could cause problems. which is why i was thinking of installing a electra scan with a keyed switch.
BTW thanks for your help so far much appreciated.

I have my doubts that it'll work. Lets wait and see if anyone else has tried it, or knows someone who has.
