Im looking to update my twins to electronic ignition. thinking of either the fordpromarine or the pertronix flamethrower II. has anyone any good or bad experiences with either of these products. I can't find any reviews for the fordpromarine. btw - i'm putting them on ford 460's

thanks

I put Pertronix kits in my Merc 3.7 distributors and couldn't have been happier! Quicker start ups and better fuel consumption and engine performance

(Edited out) so if you are aiming toward a Pertronix conversion I'd suggest the Ignitor II module kit and perhaps the "Flamethrower" coil to energize it . And be sure to remove any ballast resistor employed by the original setup. If the rotor shafts on the distributors on your 406's have any side to side play, or the tach needle is "nervous", you might well consider replacing the whole distributors with new aftermarket electronic ones.

Unfortunately, I believe the great Delco Voyager EST all electronic aftermarket distributor kits were only designed for former parent company Delco's relative's GM engines, not Fords.

You have gas engines on the 50' boat listed in your profile?

Correction : Sorry, I was wrong, Pertronix also has full distributors call Flamethrower.

I put the Petronics system in my 3.7 merc in '98. In 2007 on the way back from the fuel dock to my slip the motor quit. Sea Tow brought me in. The problem, no spark. I installed another Petronix kit and I was good to go. I wonder why the first one went bad. Should I replace this one before the 9 year mark or are they suppose to last forever?

If you installed the original Ignitor conversion kit, the module can burn out if the key is left On with engine off, such as some do to read the gas gauge in spite of fueling regulations.
The "Ignitor II" is more robust and does not suffer that weakness. Personally I would avoid the "I" if installing a conversion kit. .

No idea whether that was your issue though.
