So there was a Bay constable off our Marina the other day cracking down on Jet ski's and boats not obeying the 5mph zones. I really appreciate the time these guys spent BUT i dont think he issued a single summons. It was too quick. Each contact lasted less then 5 mins. Needless to say the same offenders were back the next day . Same boats , same jet skiers. Funny they are all out Whale neck Marine. Did i mention they call came out of Whale neck marine ?

If they did not spend the entire day sitting at Cedar Beach talking to each other, they can put a stop to this.
 
I travelled from Patchogue to Sag Harbor this weekend and the police,coastguard and bay constables were quite visible. They had all 3 located north of the locks and 2 speed traps in Quogue. They seemed to be bothering only jet skiers as well.
 
Rob, I saw that this past weekend as well. I didn't see them issuing a single summons in merrick and the same idiots were doing the same stupid things later the same day.
 
Those Jet Ski guys are as annoying as the knats and green flies. When I see them headed my way looking to jump my wake I usually come off of plane and slow down to 5 mph until they go away.
It doesn't make them happy, but better that than one of them jumps my wake and in to the path of an oncoming boat heading in the opposite direction or something.
I've ridden them in the past, a friend has two of them, and I don't see the attraction. In fact he offered to let me use them for the season several times if I keep them at my dock. I don't want them around because I don't want my kids on them.
My back was killing me for days after spending a couple of hours on one, and there wasn't even any wake jumping involved. The pounding on the spine is murder.
 
I have no issue with the jet skis or any other water toys, but I agree with you guys, they are out of control. I was anchored in the sore thumb this weekend. These guys run these jet skis from and to the beach too fast! They should idle out of the anchorage and then have all the fun they want in open water. There are people swimming from boat to boat and boat to beach - This is an accident waiting to happen.

The worst thing I saw was a guy pulling a kid at speed on a tube through the anchored boats. But wait, it gets worse - He is alone with no one on the jet ski as the watcher. So he is running around the anchored boats at speed looking behind him at the kid on the tube. Unfortunately, this guy probably does not even know the rules of having a person on the back of the jet ski watching the person being towed, let alone going too fast making wakes through an anchorage. Some of these guys were no more than 30' from the back of my boat where we generally hang out and swim. This is one of our favorite places to anchor and all it is going to take is one of these idiots running over a swimmer and it will never be the same again!

I really wish there was something we can do to stop this! I love boating and honestly observe all the safety rules and I have been boarded by the coast guard a few times and have not minded. Why aren't they fining these guys? I realize some of these guys on jet skis may be lacking brain power, but getting a fine or two would help them learn from conditioning, like Pavlov's dogs. Being on the water is all about freedom, but not at the cost of other's safety!!!

For those guys on jet skis that do adhere to the safe boating rules, thank you and I look forward to seeing you on the water.
 
When I get PWCs repeatedly jumping my wake I do a sécurité call on 16. This warns incoming boats that a mosquito may suddenly appear in front of them after crossing but also attacks LEO attention.
 
You don't see the Auxilary guys around much anymore.
They used to run the bay and look for this stuff.
I guess being volunteers and the price of fuel, they don't do it anymore.
I do see them alot on land, doing inspections and handing out stickers but not on the water.
 
I ran the little boat the other day. Went to Tobay to get some drinks, and there was a bay constable stopping small boats. No tickets, looks like just inspections. For once, I made it through without getting stopped.

Atleast they are out there, thats half the battle!
