I have been told that my engine coupler is getting week and needs replacement. It's on a 1989 Santego (30). I'm hoping I will go through this season without a failure and replace next lay-up. The mechanic recommends full engine removal. Any thoughts? The engine was checked this year and gimbal bearing replaced as a PM. Hence they found alignment out of whack which caused the wear.

The Mercruiser engine couplers, if not lubed yearly, will wear out. When running dry, the splines will become pointed and then just shear off. The nly way to replace them is to completely remove the engine...or at least move it forward in the engine bay as the coupler is on the back of the engine but not accessible from outside the boat.
