Engine Evaluation Specialist?

Just wondering if there are guys in different areas that specialize in engine evaluations, and is it ok to call them engine surveys if they are not an accredited surveyor? What do the associations such as SAMS do, if anything, to regulate or accredit someone who only does engines?

There are engine surveyors that are accredited by SAMS and specialize in engines. They are tested by SAMS for their knowledge of engines and have to pass the test with at least an 80 (I think). They are usually former mechanics that have alot of experience. Here in Florida, and I'm sure in other areas also, there are guys that all they do are engine surveys. It's considered a conflict of interest to work on the boat after you survey it.
Call SAMS at 1-800-344-9077 and ask them for an engine surveyor near you. There are probably members of NAMS that specialize in engines also.

Thanks for the responses. Just to be clear, I am not looking for a engine surveyor, I am interested in becoming an accredited engine surveyor. I have looked at the SAMS and NAMS websites and found very little information regarding the qualifications required, so I thought I would post a question here.

I was also curious as to how many engine evaluation specialists there are out there. Engine evaluations (gas engines only, all makes) have become a large percentage of my business in the last two years, and I am considering becoming the first (I believe) in my area to do only evaluations. Anyway, I would like to hear from anyone who has any input on this, I called SAMS and they are sending me an application.

DAVE, you don't need to be a member of SAMS to do gas engine evaluations.

Yes, I relize that I don't need to be a SAMS member, but I would like to be accredited if it is possible and practical. I am always interested in improving my knowledge, skills and credentials. BTW, I already am a member of AMTECH (Association of Marine Technicians).

Dave, you should investigate to determine if it is practical. Most of the guy I know find it is not.
 
I received my application package from SAMS. On the very first page of the membership information booklet, they say that they do accredit people that do engine surveys only, but it is "not applicable solely for gasoline engines".

Thanks, but SAMS does not have a place for me because I only evaluate gas engines, and not diesel.

Newportdave. If you look at all profession out there which require "Certification" by different organizations, nursing, engineers, even hair dressers you will find that in the strictest terms that education institution "accredit" and organizations "certify" people. sams is the only organization who does both. To me that is a very big red flag. Its like saying See I am trained just ask my buddy here he will tell you. There is no outside "certifying" body. Outside body "certification" is the basis of true professional organizations. NAMS cares not about "accreditation" they only care that you have done a certain number of surveys to join. Just hang out your shingle and go to work. If you want to discuss this contact me privately.. I will be happy to help with copies of contracts, forms etc.. The above comments are meant to suggest that there are both good and bad surveyors, the problem is that the public has been sold a bill of goods about perceived quality when any organization both accreditates and certifies unregulated. This is a practice which should be outlawed..... Fred
 
Check with Boat US to see what they use to qualify their recommended surveyors.

All you have to do is agree to do discount work for them and pay to be on the list.. How does that make you qualified.. I won't do ether one.. and they have never refused to accept a report of mine.. Fred
