This past weeekend I looked at two Carver Montegos. Both had twin 4 cyl/ Alpha One combonation. The broker decsribed the engines as "1/2 of a 460"He said they were rated at 190HP each and were bulitt-proof.//////////he also assured me there would be no problems getting parts. What are your thoughts on this engine?

Dave

I believe Mercury's 4 cylinder engines have been 135Hp for along time.

No,they were 4 cylinders. He said that they each had a 4 bbl so they
were the 190 version. That's why I'm asking

I have never heard of that, Im not doubting it I just haven't ever heard of it. Learn something new every day! Wish I could be more help.

they would be the 3.7 4cyl I have a pair of 180hp they run great and there is usually parts on ebay for them

the 3.7s we call the towmotor engine its a mutt made out of a ford 460 v8 head and mercs block they are dying off and do not have an exceptional long life they also do not rebuild very well its also often very hard to repower as v-6 or v8 are wider the transon needs to be pluged and recut

Yep, you guys have it right - those were the "big" 4 cylinder engines popular in the late 1980s. I wonder what kind of fuel economy you get with those???

I have a pair in my Santego not bad except for water pump replacment seal leaks internally and comes out the water pump a real delicate job to replace because of the crank shaft and timming not a do it your
self project but other than that they run great no prize on fuel but really is any boat what is the difference 2 X 4 or 2 X 6 engines still need fuel and if that was the most expensive part of boating I would be very happy
