Just had my first engine overtemp saturday. starboard engine overtemped almost immediately after coming up on plane. Engine alarm came on. Dealer says impeller failed after engine sucked up a snake. Common occurence? 8.1 Volvo OSI DXP I/O

Sucked up a snake?????

Thats a new one for me.

I have seen mussels growing in my water intake....but a snake ???[V]

For info this picture was taken after one and a half year in salt water...

I have yet to ask the mechanic what it looked like. Must have been small snake though.

We sucked up something on the way back from our last trip to Baltimore Inner Harbor last year. The alarm went off and the engine shut down. It would not restart, finally got it started up again and overheated again. We came back on one engine and after we got back to the slip I changed out the impellar. There was a fishy smelling thing stuck in there so I guess we hit some kind of sea creature. It was an 8.1 OSI Composite drive. The dealer said there are screens that can be installed over the intakes on the outdrives. We had these installed this spring when the service was done.

I have managed to ingest a jelly fish into the strainer and cut off water flow to the genset while at anchor. although I caught it right away, I’m sure I would have cooked the impeller had it gone on for more than a few moments as there was no water flow once the little fella got in there.

There is a good solution available from http://www.borelmfg.com/ they offer a temp alarm that is located immediately downstream from the riser on the exhaust hose. If there is any reduction or complete failure of the raw water supply, the first place you will see this is in the exhaust line next to the riser. The alarm there will go off before the engine can overheat. Very cheap insurance against a potentially catastrophic failure.

Jelly fish in the sea strainer. I thought this type of thing only happened to me.

All: Thanks for the input. Definitely will look in to temp alarm!
