Engine rebuilt getting it ready to go back in boat

Got the engine ( long block) back from rebuild shop and on the stand putting it back together. Gen 4 mercruiser 454 .
Is it necessary to remove the paint where the gaskets for the oil pan and timing chain cover,(etc) or should it be removed for a good seal? Also should a gasket sealer be used?
 
Engine paints are usually pretty good stuff cuz it has to withstand many heating/cooling cycles. See how conscientious they are. Check to see if paint got on the inside of the block.

Since they came out with the reusable one piece silicone pan gasket, I haven't used the old 4 piece type. Having accrued a number of years, I get the absentmindedness so I have to go back in the engine to check that I torqued all the nuts & bolts to specs. I've re-done it up to 4 times, reusing the silicone gasket. It's a life saver....and no gasket sealer needed...unless you use the old style that needs silicone at the junction of the rail and rear main and front seal.
 
I am also awaiting a 454 GM Long Block for the Boat. Old Engine had many rusty parts. I can Sandblast the rusty parts,if they are in not to bad condition and replace some parts (brackets)with Stainless Steel
What would be the best Paint to use on the new block and componants.?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
Thanks Charlie. I will check into the one piece pan gasket. Didn't know about it. Does sound like a lot easier to use.

Joe did you get your engine out yet? I had mine rebuilt. Shopped around and a coworker that worked for a marine shop a few years ago said they took all thier work there. When I dropped mine off there were two long blocks sitting there ready to wrapped in plastic with a marine shop in Pompano name written on the plastic. Back in a week reverse rotation.
 
I used Rustoleum engine paint bought at Home Depot. It is rated for 500 degrees gloss black. They also have flat black at 2000 degrees. Fine for me cause I have Mercruisers.

I sand blasted and used die grinder with wire wheel to clean up brackets and valve covers primed and painted. Just ordered a new timing chain cover off eBay. Power coated black and came with oil seal, gaskets, and new bolts for 20 bucks. Couldn't clean and paint the old one for that.
 
fire it up and run it about 30 min before installing into boat! we have never installed an engine we did not test run first
 
I would never install gaskets on top of paint.

Rechecking every bolt and nut is something learned the hard way. Either forgetful ness or creep may show up the next day.

One piece gaskets sound great.
 
I don't wanna steal this thread, but my online reseach has not provided a definative answer. I have '89 version of 454 Crusader with what I suspect is a leaking oil seal in the timing chain cover. Can the timing chain cover be R&R'd without dropping the oil pan? I would consider the replacement if the oil pan dropping was not involved.
 
That timing chain/oil pan,block is a very complicated joint with so many interconnected components that need sealing...especially if it's the corners of the old style gasket set that is leaking. A little dab of silicone at the corners is recommended, 'cept you have the problem of all that oil. If you can clean the areas, you're OK. The pan has to be loosened a tad. This where the one piece gasket would have been the perfect solution. That silicone gasket is self sealing even if a little oily.

Hmmm, I just realized you would have a later block and whether it had a one piece rear main like small blocks and if there was much difference at the timing chain end.
 
Unfortunately, by the time you add up all the time to remove everything off of the front enough to try to do it in the boat, it might be easier to pull it an do it out of the boat. If you do end up doing it in the boat and the repair fails, you'll be cursing yourself for not doing it out of the boat in the first place. Of course if any cutting is involved, I'd try it in the boat first.
 
New Longblock is in the shop. Many parts have been cleaned and Primed for painting.
Old Manifolds and Risers/Elbows to far gone to reuse. Replaceing them with new. All motor mounts also replaced with new.
Hope to have Engine back in Boat in couple of weeks.
Will definatly run engine before putting it in Boat.

Did you get your new engine in the Boat?
If so, how is it running ? I still have some work on mine but it is comming along.
