engine surging

Has anyone experienced their engine surging? I own a 1996 270 sundancer with a 7.4 liter Merc, 300 hp with Bravo II. When I cruise at around 3500 rpms my tach will suddenly go up to 4400 or more and the boat picks up speed. Then it goes back down and occassionally will do it again. My mechanic is currently working on it but I'm curious to see if others have had the same issue and what was the solution. Thanks

I don't know but if you figure it out please send me a pm. I have had my starboard engine do it to me once or twice and I couldn't figure it out, and only occured twice in two years. Got Me ???

If it is running fine, except for this, could it be a fuel problem? I would eliminate fuel pollution before paying big bucks trying to track down mechanical issues. Either try an additive or fuel polish if your boat sits for any period of time between useage.
