Fiberglass repair

So this question is for the guys that had damage during the last storm . Who's doing your repair and when do they expect the work to be done ?

Some yards are telling people work won't be started until spring , some yards made deals with off site repair shops and are shipping boats to be repaired ( in state )

Just curious what people are doing

Buddy of mine told me they are doing repairs but boat needs to be moved to a heated shop.
 
Looks like mine will have to wait until spring. In fact, I think all of my work...
 
They are all jammed up.

In my yard they are telling people not to even expect an estimate until Christmas.

Call SIYS, be patient though, we have yet to put together there communication systems. I mention them because the owner is so on top of his game and gets the back log. He has been interviewing FB crews from FL. He will shortly be ready to rock and roll over the winter with repairs. His inside shop (huge) is ready. If any of you are going to wait for a local shop with local FB guys, good luck with that. Frank from SIYS is one smart guy, he is going to capture work others cannot and more importantly, he is going to build another base that others cannot do.

I dont have any fiberglas damage, but I do have a huge electrical issue on the boat. My bow pulpit got hit a bit, and the swim platform molding was smashed up. Cant even get the boat started, batteries are fried, replaced the batteries and still wont go. The Genset on a its on battery wont fire either. When I go to start it, the genset shorts out other circuits.

The boat is being hauled next Tuesday, and then being shipped shortly after down to South Carolina, so ill have the boat fixed down south.

My adjuster has been great thus far.
 
Ours is being hauled over to a heated shop on the Island soon too. Only way they can repair the gel coat and fiberglass from what they told us. Many are keeping their insurance claims open until the Spring too cause that is when we will really understand if there are any unknown issues that won't surface until sea tests.
 
If you have dings, scrapes and gouges all around on the boat, wouldn't you rather awlgrip it than repair the gel-coat. The price to paint the whole thing can not be that much more if we are talking about spots all over the boat. The gel-coat spots will fade and change differently than the undamaged spots. I can see spots on my boat that have had repairs through the years. While not very many of them they do stick out (to me) and will be enough to cause me to paint it someday.

I will come look at it for you. Just have hand tools, I have meters, I am sure its something simple. :)

If you have a good glass guy like we do in Stony Point NY, he matches perfectly and so far, I cannot see where it was repaired, even after many years. Also fiberglass work was just completed last week on my boat, however this was not storm related and I had this pre-scheduled in August. I was one of the lucky ones who did not sustain any damage, thank god.

Electrial issues are a nightmare. Did you get salt water in your boat? If you did, you may never get it to work properly again. Make sure they keep the claim open. A lot of insurance companies will total a boat that was in salt water, they don't want to have to keep repairing it for years to come.
 
Thanks Walter, I appreciate it. Its supposed to be hauled today. If my mechanic does not come and tow it Ill give you a call, really appreiciate it!

Mike, I got no water in the boat at all. Not even a drop of water. Its weird. The boat was plugged in during the storm, but the panel for dockside power was off from the start of the storm. I have the dockside power on a separate panel from the rest of the house. So far the adjuster has been very giving as far as money goes. He is estimating 15 hours of diagnostic time to figure out this problem. For all I know it could be something as simple as a fuse. Not going to argue.

Once she is hauled, he is going to come down and inspect the running gear and such. We shall see.

Bob - I guess the guy/s that worked on ours through the years were not as talented. The spots that have been repaired are only noticeable up close and probably only because I have waxed the whole boat. But they are noticeable

If the batteries are fried there is a good chance the switch is too, maybe even the starters.
 
Hey John

I replaced the batteries to get her running and over to the mechanic. She ran great. Should be hauled and on a truck in a few days
