Finger Screws?

Mine is a year 2002 8kw diesel. The newer models don't use screws to hold the panels on.

The screws that I want are knurled on one end and sharp pointed on the other end. They are held to the removable panel by a clip to keep them from falling out, although mine obviously did or I would still have them. They are somewhere in the bilge.

I did indeed take one of the Northern Lights screws to the hardware store and the business end was a sheet metal screw.

I will live with the #14's that are subbing for the real thing for now.
 
You screw the wing nuts on to the screws from the wrong side of the nut and tighten them, then JB.

No thanks. I don't want wear circles on the panel.

I would really rather have what I have rather than trying some odd fix.
 
The problem with assisting yo is that there are many, many versions of the item. Without a photo or drawing ( from mfgr socuments ) we can't help much.

Jim's method is a viable workaround...

I have looked at the Google Images page and have yet to find one with a knurled end and a pointed end. I don't want another work around because I already have one...standard sheet metal screws. They work just fine for holding the panel in place. All I asked is if anyone knows where I can find a replacement for the Northern Lights screws. This is no big deal. If they are only available from NL because they had them special made, that is fine.

Are they magnetic? Drop a magnet down in your bilge and fish out the originals?

OK Thought you were talking about a thumb screw which Lowes might have. There are many types shown if you search but I have never seen a captive one and they are usually machine thread.
 
After some contortions I got one off.

Stainless steel so no magnet.

 
What does magnetic have to do with it. Don't drop them.

I would have suggested a bungee cord, duct tape or ty wraps, but I suppose no one would see the humor in it.

You might be surprised by how much "stainless" your magnet ends up picking up.:-)
 
The Northern Lights part # is 00-78213....
Thumb Screw. RPM Diesel lists them for $17.17 each on their web site.

It took about an hour to find this on the Internet. I have every parts and owner's manual for my PX-308K1 except for the optional sound shield.
 
This thread only goes to prove that a good screw is hard to find!

But, all I asked for in my original post was a cheaper screw.
 
Ha! Ha! Ha! Sounds like you're getting a pretty good screwing here.

If that screw had normal threads it would be an easy job to modify a knurled nut to fit a modified screw. I think NL saw you coming.:(
