So the Mrs and I are thinking about taking the boat to Fire Island this coming summer for a few days. We have no amenities on the boat, so we will need to get a room somewhere.

I haven't been to Fire Island since I was a kid, and back then my folks had a boat big enough to sleep on.

Can anyone suggest a marina that isn't too far from a hotel type place...Marina wise, I do not need electric, beam is 8ft.

Also, we aren't really drinkers or party people, so I don't know if that would change some suggestions.

Thanks

I have no experience with a hotel, they all seem a little run down to me. I have rented a house for a week and that was a blast. It was back in the 80's but if I remember the Kismet area was not too out of control price wise.

I haven't been in decades either but run down was the theme except for Cherry Grove which was something else altogether. .

Long away and far ago we took all the camping stuff on my 16' sail boat and set up on several of the small islands. It was kind of neat to have your own island. Swimming, shelling, clamming it was a blast.

You could dock at Flynns and stay at fire island hotel or ocean beach town dock and plenty of hotels in town.

Or Kismet, but Ocean Beach is probably best place for action and nightlife.

Dock at Seaview and walk to OB.
It's right there.
Seaview is cheap before memorial day and after labor day. In season it's like $350/night to dock.

Keep in mind, the size of the rooms can be small to normal size. I believe some rooms might not of had a private bath. Point is look at the website and choose your accommodations accordingly. Four or so years ago my daughter wanted to spend her prom night with friends on our boat, took her and her friends to Ocean Beach, they stayed on the boat and Denise and I stayed at the Palms. I loved the ambiance, the people and room. We had a little room, but had our own bathroom. Not cheap, but we did get a certificate to eat at our place of choice (offset the room cost) of about three places in the town. There is nothing on all of FI that compares to the Palms, like, not even close!

My experience with hotels on FI were pre-Sandy, since many got wrecked during Sandy, hence rebuilt, they maybe better now.

Palms is definitely the nicest place at Ocean Beach. Cheapest weekend rate there is approx $400 per night. You can dock at town marina for approx $70/nt, maybe a little more. Unfortunately I do not know any other nice or even decent less expensive hotels there.

WOW. Didn't realize it was so expensive to dock at Fire Island. The money isn't an issue. No way I am paying that kind of money when I am only being tied up, no water, no electric.

At the end of the day its what the Mrs wants to do so Ill give her all this info and she can decided yes or no.

thanks guys

Best bet is take the ferry over, why bring boat if not staying on boat.
If your gonna stay on boat with water and electric, then go to Seaview.
If staying in a hotel, take the ferry!

we were hoping to use the boat during the day though...

hmm..ill see if I convince her to take aferry

Option could be to dock the boat at say Kismet, then take water taxi over to OB.
Not sure it will work out cheaper.
Kismet charges to dock but gives credit at the Inn, so sort of a wash.
But the taxi costs can add up.
Flynns would be a option as well, pay to dock and credit, but more expensive and not a full credit unless during the week and not for over-night.

If you can trailer the boat, bring it out east and find a place there. Gone Fishing Marina in Montauk has a nice ramp and you could keep the boat there overnight.

At the end of last season I bought a monster of a trailer for this boat too.

Again, its not price that bothers me. Maybe its me, I don't see a whole lot to do during the day other then go to the beach at Fire Island...

I would stay far away from Fire Island during the weekend, so this would be a mid week trip

During the week is cheaper to dock at both Ocean Beach and Kismet. The water taxi is expensive. We took it a couple times from Kismet to Ocean Beach for a change of pace from Kismet and I think it was $8 per person each way - $32 roundtrip for 2 people - Crazy! I had a family of 5 - It killed me. I can spend stupid money on the boat without a second thought, $80 for a 2 minute ferry ride plus over priced dinner drives an arrow through my heart..

You and your wife should definitely do fire island - It is a special place, especially during the week.

Maybe you can get the one is enough weekday discount. Glad you are ok!!!

Come on SPRING!!!!

Just call the Palms.
Since they own most of OB, I am sure they can get you dockage at Matthew's for a reasonable yet expensive price if you pay for a over priced room in their hotel!!!

Stay away from the ferry it's like being on the bus with the factory workers. That's why we have boats
