Fireworks 2012

There are other elements and gases in diesel exhaust that will make you ill way before you are dead. No that way with gas.

If you were in a sealed room with diesel exhaust pouring directly into it, you will die, just like the Jews did in Nazi concentration camps. But there is no situation like that here.

I'm not trying to argue if the gensets should run all night or not, just trying to get the facts correct on the chances of dying from CO poisoning from a diesel motor.

If the ABYC didn't think it was an issue than I am good with that.

Search the internet to find a death caused by CO from a diesel engine.

I have and the dominant phrase is "much less likely" i'm not trying to argue the facts. However, for many reasons including the possibility of serious illness or death, No matter what the odds are, it seems that it would be more prudent to shut them down at night then to run them. Getting sick and throwing up is no way to spend the night out either. It is especially difficult for me because I run on gas and do not like to run my generator all night. However, I raft up with several diesel folks and get heavy smell in my cabin forcing me to close down my boat hatches and doors. So my choice is heat or fumes.

There are many boats that must run the generator in order to have things such as water and refrigeration when away from the docks shore power. These are almost always diesel based boats and I've been rafted to many of them and never had to deal with smell or have a CO alarm ever go off.

I'll respect the policies of those that start a raft-up but if I'm the one that drops the first hook then overnight use of diesel generators is acceptable. People that join after the fact can choose to leave if they are uncomfortable with that.

I do the same and either way is not a deal breaker for me. If you have never delt with the smell, you must have diesels and keep it closed up at night. Quite frankly, I have never not had to close my hatch because of diesel smell. I have three brand new co detectors on the boat so the odds that all would fail at the same time is also highly unlikely. I just don't feel comfortable running when I'm sleeping. Simple as that.

Hank I understand and I will try to make sure (if I can) that you are on an end away for the adjacent exhaust if this will help. If you tie to my port side as the end I think you will be OK I tend to shut it down when I'm sleeping but will run it from time to time to cool down if I get too hot.

Rommer well put and I agree!

But then I'm usually the first to drop anchor:)

I'm the one that drops the first hook.
All adults, bathings suits optional

LOL We keep our clothing on so we can keep our appetite. While there are those of us that could pull that off I'm not among them.

I'm in this category. All except one of the fridges are 110V only. That, along with the fact that the port and starboard staterooms don't have deck hatches mean that A/C is a must on warm nights. We start our genny before we leave the dock, and it doesn't get shut off until we hit the next dock.

When rafting up with other boats, gas or diesel at night the rule is shut them down. It is not worth getting sick or dying for.

Nothing like temporarily joining a raftup to say hi and have a cold one while your twin baby girls are sleeping early in cabin.
Even though I had no genny, my CO detector went off. Guy next to me shuts his genset, we air things out.
Went off again so all boats in raftup shut down.

Yep, no way in hell me and my family are sleeping near your genny...even two or ten boats away. I heard the warning shot.

Hope this does not get lost but add peekskill to the fireworks list, July 4th for them.

No fireworks in Red Bank this year. FYI.

No great loss, Bowline's are much better.

I'm hoping to have Harlan rafted-up with us.

Tonight's fireworks? does anyone know what time they close the entrance to the pond my kid gets off of work at 7 tonight I need to go pick her up and return, round trip is real quick but I don't want to be told I can't come back in. I'm thinking of taking the jetski just to make this a quicker trip.

BTW tonight looks like it will be cool may not have to run Benny after all:)

They usually don't close it till about 1/2 hr before the fireworks begin

I will be picking up my daughter right around the same time. Plan on shuffling with my sisters boat so we may be able to coordinate. I will have my dink as well so let's see how it all unfolds.
