First project new skills added

We're planning to build our next boat and have used our current boat as a rehab project to build some of the skills we'll need. One thing we've done is invest in some good quality tools, a HD Singer 500A sewing machine and snap tool. So today the wifey (KnottyGirlz) put together her first zip in plastic window. For a first timer it's actuall pretty good. Not professional but good 'nuff for this ole' boat. We chose the smoked plastic for UV protection and some privacy (no nothing funky going on in the cockpit keep it clean fellas). Over the last few years we've done a lot of wiring, systems upgrades, tune ups and you might remember the outdrive fiasco. It's pretty self satisfying to be able to do all these things ourselves and become more self sufficient. Total cost in materials for this one window about $40. Besides all that it was fun!

Hmmmmmm......It's gonna be interesting to see how you get the engines etc. in. Would you "snap" them in or "sew" them in?

I just finally got mine back from a canvas shop after three weeks and yours look every bit as good if not better. Mine got Butchered.

Actually tanq you're closer than you think!!!

The basic building method is called "Stitch & Glue". Google it you'll find lots of info. The model we're building is a Bateau design but there are others that use the method, Devlin, Glen-L etc.

Sorry bout your windows. We had a canvas guy but he turned out to be a drunk and frigged up plenty of material before I managed to get him to do it right. (I wouldn't give him any beer till the job was done). If ours suk we got nobody to blame but ourselves. ;-)

Hmmmm? A cabin? With smoked windows? Hmmmm? And just what do you suppose we'd be doin' in there eh? *wink*
 
It Feels good to do it yourself Rick, i built Cabinets in my galley where there was none and a sink/ icemaker in the cockpit

 
That's nice work Mike. You wouldn't know it from OEM installation. Very nice. I think most of us get a lot of satisfaction from doing things like this for ourselves. You can put as much or as little care into it as you like. While it's yours you're the only one that's gotta live with it. Thnx for the pics.
 
I was thinking a hard framed enclosed structure for the helm. It makes a world of difference. If you made it out of wood, you'd learn jointery. Mike would be good at it.

I don't think it'd be worthwhile to try something like that on our old boat. She's done prett well for over 20 yrs w/o a helipad on top! ;-)

There's gonna be plenty of wood in our next project, well unless I decide to switch to foam for the core material. I've got the tools and will work on the woodworking skills this winter. My brother is a cabinet/furniture maker and has a fully equipped workshop so we should be able to produce some good stuff.

Wow! That looks 30'. I read about stitch 'n glue but that size looks like it would need glass to reinforce the corners. Looks like fun.

I did a couple a small cabins on my boats and found really quickly the there is no such thing as square, plumb or parallel. Also found out lap joints required too much precision. I found a type of mortise/tenon joint called a bridle joint cut a little loose to allow alignment adjusting and filling the joint with thickened epoxy and setting a couple dowels makes an extremely solid joint. The trickiest joint is the top of the center post of the windshield where you may have 4 rails coming together all at different angles. That's a project in itself. Try not to use screws anywhere. A boat moves and screws don't. They will eventually wear a hole in the wood. Good luck with the project. I'm envious.
 
It was originally designed for 28'. We've discussed extending the mid section another 30" with the designer. It is S&G and if bought from a kit it's done on CNC so most of the angles etc. are already taken into account and tabs are strategically placed for alignment & reinforcement issues. I'm planning on using a resin infusion method to glass the hull. Not for the feint of heart but we're practicing on smaller projects building up the knowledge/skills required. There'll be a combination of 1708 biaxial fabric on the outside and 1208 on the inside. The hull will be marine plywood and the cabin & decks will likely be a structural foam core. I have lots of carbon fiber to reinforce the panel joints and key strutural areas including the stem & keel. For the last yr or so we've been acquiring all the lil' bits & pieces required to fit out the boat. Our basement looks like a Chandlers store! ;-)
 
Yeah, I usually start collecting parts 'n pieces that end up being 3 years before I actually start the project.
 
Tried my hand at the sewing machine tonight. It wasn't pretty! ;-) Now I can appreciate the wifey's seamstress skills. That's hard work!
