Finally got a chance to do a short shake down cruise. The old girl hit 20kts and cruised at a solid 17kts. So far so good. Generator purred flawlessly, longest it has run so far in years.

Previously with the 8V71Ns, top speed was 13kts... now she pops on plane nicely, helped by larger trim tabs.

I was wondering what was happening. Congratulations. I'm a bit surprised that top was 20 I expected faster. What does she weigh?

Not sure what the exact weight is. These old Hatteras are heavy. 19 to 20 kts is exactly what the prop shop calculation was.

Also the new stabilizers are big. So even locked, that s a good knot of drag

Still a lot of work ahead but al least the mechanicals and critical stuff are pretty much done

Ahhh, the "shake loose" trip.

Be sure to check the bilge for "spares" that may have dropped down... :D

Congratulations and happy trails on your new speedboat, Pascal!

Great outcome for all the work you have done!
do you have a Pic of the new stabilizers?

Congratulations Pascal. Have you documented the repower anywhere on the internet for us to see?

Rich

FYI my 42'X 15' 38,000 # Carver with the same engines did 25Kts empty and 22 loaded with all the life stuff. I cruised at 17-18 2150 RPM. It had 33" props that I always suspected caused more drag tan smaller props would but with 2.9:1 gears they were stump pullers. Don't know where you ran but in deep water it will go faster than in shallow. OTOH a friends 42 sea ray did 29KTs with the same engines.

I found a couple of old spec sheets from Hatteras where the dry weight is listed as 55000 lbs. The repower shaved about 3000 lbs so figure 52000 dry. Boat is still pretty much loaded with tools, parts and a lot of wood and stuff so who knows what the actual weight is. These hulls were never designed for speed like modern production boats but that sharp entry just slices thru waves.

I have a couple of videos of the repower on www.youtube.com/Sandbarhopper

It is a well trained dog, helps get the bow down until on plane ;-)!

How are the exterior cosmetics coming along?

Cosmetics and paint will be last, at least a year away. i need to finish the interior including th new forward stateroom (already gutted the old bunks and small head) and build th new forward head where the dinette used to be...

Hey Pascal - this is a TREMENDOUS IMPROVEMENT !

I know how you feel with the shakedown - did mine in 2006 with the Yanmar Diesels and created an entirely different boat.

Now it's 12 years later and I'm just finishing up the cosmetic side.

So we end up with NEW BOATS !

Makes one feel accomplished

CONGRATS TO YOU !!!

That s why so many are still afloat after 40 to 50 years

After Irma, i had a 20 foot section of toe rail ground open. The aft ER bulkhead was unrabbed and pushed in 2". The 20' section of hull side held up without a stress crack...

I don’t know yet. It will be pretty close at hull speed. At 17kts cruise I m pretty sure they be more efficient than the Detroit were at their 13 kts top speed :)
