there shoudl be rules about where fish/crab traps can be set... here in south florida, they routinely place them in channels or in the keys right in the ICW. some spots down there are so densely covered that you have to change course every 10 seconds and can't navigate at night.
Last night I had a close call with a buoy located about 150 yards off the entrance of my marina channel almost on centerline... it's not a small private channel, there must be well over 1000 boats docked and moored there.
i spotted the little foam ball at the last minute, under half a boat length away. Even at 9kts that was a close call. full rudder one way, by then the float had disappeared under the bow, then imediately full rudder the other way to kick the stern away. it worked but it must have been very close...
what are these fishermen (or do we have to say fishingperson) thinking... do they enjoy loosing their traps ?
