Fixed or Handheld?

While I am not totally new to the boating scene, I am a new boatowner and have a question. I am trying to decide on whether to buy a fixed vhf radio, or a handheld. I do know the ranges and power of transmission are quite different, but am wondering which would be best for my situation? We just purchased a Catalina 25 and will be, for now, only lake sailing. The boat is on Grand Lake in Oklahoma and at the outside, the lake is probably 20-30 miles long. For the size of boat I have and since I am not coastal sailing, I was wondering if the handheld would be sufficient? I am open to either, its just that the handheld seems more convienent.
