Hello all.

Can anyone point me to the spec for the electric fuel pump flow rate (not pressure) required to sustain a 1998 Vortec 5.7L with a 2 barrel rochester carb at WOT?

Thanks,

what is your HP? If we assume 270, I believe you need about 135 lbs of fuel per hour to run at WOT. So that’s about 21 gph. Or was it the old style heads that hit 270hp, and vortec is closer to 300? That would be 24 gph, using the formulas below.

Your fuel pump should be able to supply more fuel than the engine needs. The float will shut off the fuel inlet when the fuel bowl is full.

Yes, the pump must provide much more than the engine requires - if the engine requires 24 gph to maintain Wot, the pump must provide a lot more than that. for the high hp engines they do all kinds of calculations that take into account hose length and size, filters, etc. but for the average small block carbed Chevy - no point in all this. Pretty much any pump that gives you the needed 5 or so psi is going to have plenty more in gph than you would need.
