All,

This si probably a dumb question but..

I am going to help winterize a friend's boat. I've doen mine for years.

The only difference is that his engine is fuel injected and mine carburated. (-2 for spelling. On my engines, teh last step is to spray fogging oil into the throuat of the carb. Where do you spray the fogging spray on an EFi boat? Is the air intake the same?

This a copy of a Mercury service bulletin, while several years old, as far as I'm aware it's still considered as the proper procedure:

September 2001
Mercury Service Bulletin No. 2001-15

New Gasoline EFI/MPI Engine Fogging Procedure

Models
All MerCruiser gasoline EFI and MPI engines produced in Stillwater.

NOTE: This change does not apply to carbureted engines produced in Stillwater or Hi-Performance engines produced by Mercury Racing.

Change
Follow this new fogging procedure when laying an engine up for storage.

Fogging Mixture
In a 6 US gal (23 L) remote outboard fuel tank, mix:

5 US gal (19 L) regular unleaded 87 octane (90 RON) gasoline.
64 fl oz. (1.89 L) Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard oil.
5 fl oz. (150 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer, OR
1 fl oz. (30 mL) Mercury or Quicksilver Fuel System Treatment and Stabilizer Concentrate.

New Fogging Procedure
1. Disconnect and plug boat’s fuel line from Water Separating Fuel Filter inlet.
2. Connect remote outboard fuel tank (with the fogging mixture) to the inlet of the Water
Separating Fuel Filter.

IMPORTANT: If the boat is out of the water, follow instructions for running engine on flush device as found in service manual for the engine being fogged.

3.
a. Cool Fuel models: Start and run engine at 1300 rpm for 5 minutes.
b. VST models: Start and run engine at 1300 rpm for 10 minutes.

4. After specified running time is complete, slowly return throttle to idle rpm and shut engine off.

IMPORTANT: Do not run engine’s fuel system dry of this fogging mixture in the 6 US gal (23 L) remote outboard fuel tank.

In my "Seloc 2007" Bravo 3 Merc Manual-It says to put mercury 2 cycle oil in the "oil/water separator" for a few seconds.Shut off engine and pull plugs one at a time and fog each cylinder.

I'm having the Marina do mine this year.

I am clueless re fogging. I just put two carbed 1996 Merc 454s in heated storage. Can you give me the quick simple approach to fogging them? Thanks.

Bliss, it's pretty easy. Pull off the flame arrestor from the top of the carb (it looks like an air filter). Start up the engine and start spraying fogging oil into the carb until the engine smokes, sputters, and dies. If it doesn't die, then turn it off after about 15-20 seconds. Of course, make sure the motor is attached to a water source (like those ear muff things you put on the outdrive, and then make sure to drain the engine (there's probably 4 or 5 blue plastic or brass drain plugs in the block and/or manifolds), just in case the heated storage becomes un-heated.

P.S. You can pickup a spray can of fogging oil at your local auto outlet. Some guys use two stroke oil, and others use plain old motor oil, but most manufacturers reccommend actual fogging oil.

Next year. It is in storage with no water supply. Also, SG, they are fresh water cooled- no anti-freeze.
