For anyone who's built their own boat....

Rick, your boat looks a lot bigger than the Stoere Meid.
At least I thought it did from the Bottom.
Jeez that makes me wonder what a Fish might think of that big thing coming over top of him?

AC Electricity and I have always had a real love/hate relationship. This morning Miss Voltage almost stung me again so I packed it in early!

Another marathon session with the epoxy & fiberglass. Added a layer of 12 oz 0/90 to the bottom. Both sides. Took me 8 hrs. Had a helper lined up but he never showed so I did it myself. Worked off the step ladder instead of climbing up on the boat which helped.

The Project Manager was barking orders.

Something to the effect "Get the damn thing done already, would ya?"

There won't be any work in the boat shed today. Was up half the night in agony! I guess the energy drinks were masking the fact I was pushing it a lil' bit too much! Gettin' old suks!

I'm happy with the result. I could have squeegeed a bit more in some places but they were hard to reach from the step ladder.

We had a cool night last night and the epoxy is still a little soft. After some sanding of the fabric edge along the keel/bottom join I'll lay out the fabric for the keel and get that glued down. Likely Monday. Standby.

Four hours of sandinsanity today. The fresh epoxy I bought is hard as a rock in 48 hrs. Hardest I've had to sand yet. I'm pooched!

Thanks dl

Three more hours of sandinsanity this morning. Glass is laid out for the sides. We'll be pourin' epoxy form the jugs tomorrow!

Had a buddy come over to help out with the epoxy work today. Jimmy (Sticky Fingers) Campbell joined the boat shed crew for the day. It made the 4 hours work in 7 1/2 hours go by quickly!

Just nice to have someone in the shed who's not begging for ear scratchies all the time! :-)

If I said I was happy it'd be an understatement! No drips, runs, bubbles, voids or dinkleberries to sand off later! :D

This was the area with the hump were the panel joins deformed. I was worried I wouldn't be able to fair it out. I'm sure the Project Manager would approve if he'd get out of his basket and inspect the workin's!

A long piece of wood molding such as a screen stop makes a decent batten for testing fairing

Thanks for the tip Bruce. I'm not quite at that stage yet but after the next layer I will be! :-)

Got some great building weather coming this way for the next week or so so gonna hit it hard and see if I can't get the remaining glass on the hull. After that all I'll have to do is prep for primer & bottom paint! Standby.....

You guessed it.... More Sandinsanity! My Own Private Hell! Web Log Updated: del/2013/08/my-own-private-hell.html

It was tough going. I slogged it out with the RO and block sanders for 6 hrs. I'm pooched and stink. I need a shower!

I'll spare the gory details but I learned a few things in the shed today..... Web Log Updated: del/2013/08/i-learned-few-things-today.html

What get's me is that they can put all of this into a mold after spraying in some gel coat and not have to sand in between layers.

Good observation. If I was able to work wet on wet (applying a second layer within 24 hrs) I wouldn't have to sand either. Physically it's impossible on a boat his size for an old fart like me doing it myself. That's the downside of a project like this. I knew it would be a lot of work but sheez! I have one of those WTF moments every time I walk in the shed! ;-) I'm about to have another one of those moments in about 5 mins when I head out there again! Thnx for looking in boatbum.

Same covering Thud. Different camera. The GoPro doesn't seem to be so sensitive to blue like my iPhone. I'm trying to use the GoPro a lot more.

Because building the mold is time consuming so for a one off it s a lot faster to spend a little more time sanding than building the mold which has to have a mirror perfect finish.

Then you have to make sure the mold is coated properly to release the hull or else you will spend countless hours sending and fixing gel coat.

Rick...

My definition of sandsanity is as follow: you start working a 6 sqaure inch piece of wood with a belt sander, then switch an RO, followed by a mouse detail sander. Then pull a multimax with sanding attachment and top it all off with a Dremel rotary.

You ll see what I mean in a few months :)
