I have a 1990 Chris Craft 501 Motoryacht I am thinking of giving away. Due to health problems, I will never use it again. It does need work, but I am no longer interested. With the cost of dockage and insurance, I don't want to spend the time or money to sell it.

I just want it gone. The deal would be "AS IS, Where IS". The boat is currently in Lake Park, FL.

I thought I would place it here first to see if there was any interest.

The boat is sitting in the water and has not been moved in 2 years. I do have a diver that cleans the bottom every 3 weeks. The engines are started and run for 30 minutes every week. I just had the boat waxed last month.

The boat is in decent condition inside and out.

The engines are Detroit 6V92's and start and run very well. no smoke at all. The boat also has Naiad Stabilizers on it. The electronics have been updated. Including, AIS, new NEMA 2000 autopilot, two GPS's, two VHF radios, 6 person life raft, EPIRB, five cameras fuel polisher, and more. It has an older radar. All electronics are networked via NEMA 183 and NEMA 2000.

The boat has some problems that need to be addressed and other things that should be addressed. To get the boat back to 100% would cost around $50K. To get is usable, would probably cost around $10-20k, depending on how much work you want to do. It needs bottom paint, and one shaft is seized in the packing gland. I haven't even tried to free it yet. Outside of that, everything else is maintenance related could be done over time. The 20kw ONAN generator works, but does smoke a lot and probably needs an valve job or engine rebuild.

But for a whole lot less than you could buy used, somebody is getting a very nice 50' yacht.

Does this sound like something anybody would be interested in.

Capt.Steve, sure sounds tempting, Just sold my 37C last year & I'm not over it yet. It was time; I did 110% of everything on vessel. NOBODY touches BOB'S boat. It was growing 3 foot/year re labor; I just turned 75 & I got 12.5 % over high retail. Today, I think I would have done it differently. Keep boat & let other people do the labor even tho it won't be as good if I did it ! Too late !

When you get a chance. Is boat located by Dania beach.

Run 6V92TA's at work. Ours smoke a lot, but we absolutely beat the dog piss out of them. Those engines suffer savage abuse and keep coming back for more.

Is this like yours, Steve?

There also is a Minnesota listing at GalatiYachts of an updated 1989 501 showing interior shots , offered at $225,000.

Sounds like a very generous offer for the next person to potentially enjoy your 501 and get it roaming once again. If I was considering that type & size of boat, I would probably be on my way to Palm Beach for a close look and friendly chat.

It's sad to hear health issues have prevented your use of your Chris in recent years. Wishing you and the Chris well.

Ron - No, the boat is in Lake Park which is about 40 miles north of Dania. I am about 1.5 miles north of Lake Worth inlet. Dania is just south of Ft. Lauderdale.

Please call me when you get a chance. Is Chris galley up or down?

Still available?
Captain like Bob J said; " wish he might have done different". With that in mind would you want to explore the possibilities of staying in boating if someone provided the funds and logistics of getting your Chris back to its rightful shape? I have accumulated a boating war chest and have a nurse. Between me and the nurse [wife] we could have you and the boat back to where they were 5 years ago. Sound to good to be true?
Seriously...I would look at this and see if it is something I would invest in. Feel certain I would want the boat near me if I took it on. I am employed at a boat yard in Stuart but know I would need your expertise also. geware[at]gmail[dot]com

WHy give it away? Sounds like the boat has some value. Pictures? Just curious.

Capt. Steve,
My family and I are very interesting in talking to you about this boat. Please email me at bill[at]the-hyatts[dot]com (Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I can not get PM's to work today).

Thanks!

Over the last few days I have received numerous phone calls and emails from people who know me. Additionally the response on the forum has been amazing. Just to let everyone know, I think I have found a new home for my baby. The potential new owner and I will be meeting next week to finalize everything.

I would like to thank everyone who expressed interest in my boat. I would especially like to thank all who were concerned about my health. To clarify a little, there is nothing seriously wrong, other than getting old and a little arthritis. It is just that I am not physically able to use and maintain a 25 year old 50' boat any longer.

I have a list of everyone who expressed interest. If looking at the boat the potential new owner decides that they really don't want it, I will offer it to the next person on the list.

Capt. Steve,
That is great. It is always sad to see someone have to move on from a great boat, but it is even worse to see what happens to the boats that just sit unused and ignored because they have not sold in years. I think we have all seen way too many of those boats.

Best wishes for the next part of your journey.

This whole THREAD is Class! Nobody tried to score a quick find, nobody teased, many urged restraint and thoughtful consideration.

This is what friends - shipmates - do.

Well the papers were sign this afternoon and the boat has changed hands.

The boat is everything Steve said it was and wasn't. It's got flaws that he has been very forth coming about but they are few overall and none insurmountable. I freed the stbd stuffing box from the shaft this afternoon so the boat should not have to be towed to the yard after all. And the engines really do start up from cold with just an initial puff of smoke and settle right down to a nice smooth and smokeless idle.

It's obvious that Steve and his girlfriend have really cared for and enjoyed their boat. And that is just my friend who I turned on to this deal plans to do with it as well.

First we'll take it to a local yard and haul it out to do a bottom job, service the NAIADs, have the props and shafts worked over, check and replace the strut bearings if need be, replace the stuffing boxes and their hoses, replace seacocks as needed, perhaps compound and wax the hull, etc. Basically take care of all the below water stuff at one time. Then move it to Lauderdale where I'll move aboard and start servicing more of the systems as they may need it. While making and over seeing the kind of personalized changes and additions to the interior and exterior that new owner wants made over the next 12 months.

The boat is really in good shape overall with lots of upgrades and good stuff like the MultiSea control system for the NAIADs, Reverso 80 gph fuel polishing system with built in timer, 4 - 50a Glendinning cord sets 2 on each side of the boat, newer Simrad autopilot, NMEA 2000 backbone, 5 cameras with monitor, AIS, EPIRB, liferaft, etc. and spare filters for everything. Plus full sets of detailed manuals for the boat itself and the engines. In fact if you just freed up the stuffing box and straightened out a couple issues with the genset you could go cruising with the boat as it is now.

Steve has been nothing but a true gentleman, a pleasure to deal with and very helpful in everyway through this transition. Plus he is making himself available to answer any questions that come up as we work on the boat.

So we'd like to publicly thank him here for all that.

It just goes to show, that once in very great while, a deal that sounds to good to be true, really is good and true. As is the person behind the deal.

Thanks again Steve.
