What is the best way to drain and clean a 40 gallon fresh water tank? The tank has sediment in it from the well water. Know of anything I should add to the water after cleaning? Some one suggested "Sweet Water"? Thanks

If you can get all the sediment suspended in the water [lots of agitation], then flush it through by turning on all the faucets and adding water through the intake. This is assuming you cannot easily remove the tank.

Then install some kind of filter before the tank to prevent more sediment from accumulating. You can sweeten your water tank by adding a baking-soda/water mixture to the tank.

I use a screw on filter when putting water in my tanks and when hooked up to the dockside water. They are not that expensive at WM, Less may have them here. They screw on a regular water spigot and the house screws on the filter. When the water flow starts to slow down it's time to change the filter.

The tank should have a drain so drain it. You might be able to remove a fitting and get a pump inside to get more water out or even get your hand inside to clean it out (or get someone with small hands to help). Partially fill and drain it until you get the sediment out.

Then, use a sediment filter like the others suggested when you fill it. If it's your well, you should already have a filter in your water system.

Be careful with "turning on all the faucets" to drain the tank. If you have a screen filter immediately down stream of your pump which keeps getting clogged up DO NOT be tempted to remove this screen to empty the tank through the faucets. If you do not have some type of in-line filter you will end up spending a lot of time taking apart all your faucets and cleaning out THEIR filters.
